First Lady DeSantis is inviting students to participate in academic and creative contests based on theme, “Community Champions – Celebrating the Contributions of African Americans in Florida’s Communities.” Students in grades K-3 can participate in an art contest while students in grades 4-12 can participate in an essay contest. Additionally, students, parents, teachers and principals are invited to nominate full-time educators of all student grades for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award.
About the Student Essay Contest
First Lady Casey DeSantis’ Black History Month Essay Contest is open to all 4-12 students in Florida. Each student will submit one essay no longer than 500 words based on this year’s theme. Three winners will be selected: one elementary school student (grades 4-5), one middle school student (grades 6-8) and one high school student (grades 9-12). Each winner will receive a 4-Year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

Student contest forms and educator nomination forms must be mailed to Volunteer Florida or submitted online at www.FloridaBlackHistory.com.
The Joint Science and Technology Institute (JSTI) is an all-expenses-paid residential STEM research experience in Maryland or New Mexico. Join us to participate in a hands-on research project mentored by scientists while living on campus at a university! You will gain research experience and problem solving skills while learning about STEM careers and meeting new people.
Where is JSTI?
There are two separate Joint Science and Technology Institutes. JSTI East will take place in Towson, Maryland and JSTI West will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Who can apply?
JSTI East is a two week institute for high school students and teachers as well as a one week academy for middle school students. JSTI West is a two week institute for high school students. See complete eligibility information at the websites.
What can I learn?
Research topics vary each year. Common research areas include microbiology, engineering, 3D printing, mathematical modeling, cyber security and more!

Let friends and family know that we are now accepting applications for incoming freshmen and juniors for the 2021-2022 school year! Friday the 19th will be our first lottery drawing and seats are going quick! Applications can be found on our website at scfcs.scf.edu/venice, along with information sessions held via Facebook Live. These information sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday, and saved for viewing later!

Volunteer Opportunities
SCFCS Venice students can receive one community service hour for each pair of jeans donated, up to five hours (five pairs of jeans). Have questions? See Ms. Tosi.
Gulfcoast South Area Health Education Center (GSAHEC) hasdeveloped a NEW program called Career Chats. On the first Wednesday of every month, from 6:30-7:30 pm, any middle or high school students interested in health careers are welcome to join our Zoom meeting. We will highlight a different health career every month with guest speakers, videos, thought provoking activities, and discussion groups.
Career Chats enable students to learn from experienced health professionals, increases their knowledge about health careers, and motivates the students to develop effective short and long term educational and career plans. With over 300 careers available within the healthcare field, our goal is to inspire high school students to consider a career in health by encouraging exploration of all their future career options.
