February 2021

Facebook FlickrYouTube Twitter

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Partners,

The World Radio Day (WDR) on February 13th has offered a great chance to celebrate radio, digital radio, and DRM, especially. On the tenth anniversary of WDR we launched our first ever DRM education e-book (E-book) and noted WDR-dedicated articles in the specialised press. There were many celebratory events, and we will highlight the one in Pune, India, and also Pakistan, where a nationally shown TV documentary was reconfirming commitment of the national broadcaster to DRM.

In our newsletter you will find details about these special moments, as well as an ITU podcast about the resilience and future of radio inclusive of DRM. We are also publicising a link to an item on the value of DRM shortwave presented recently by the Voice of America TV channel.  One of the demonstrations mentioned in this TV piece is also the current DRM shortwave trial in Brazil which gets enthusiastic feedback from 880 kilometres away, from the UK: “I have enjoyed uninterrupted music on 11910kHz for the last two days. Shortwave at 8000km without fadeouts is superb by any standard. I really hope they keep this up. DRM should be adopted worldwide to provide national and intercontinental radio across borders without interruptions” (Francis Borg).

This month is definitely a celebratory month, as DRM was presented to HFCC and ASBU participants on February 10th and will also be on the agenda of the EBU Digital Radio Summit on the 17th.

An important DRM for FM trial in preparation just now, new innovations from RFmondial in Germany, successes from Hungary and news about Nautel and Digidia will round up this February bumper newsletter.

The Q@A section of the newsletter has taken off and your questions are much appreciated. Please keep them coming!

Finally, please do not forget to join us on Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.  And if you want to join the Consortium please contact projectoffice@drm.org.

World Radio Day Celebrated

This year’s celebrations to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the UNESCO World Radio Day was more vibrant than ever.  The over-arching themes of evolution, innovation, and connection underlined radio as a powerful medium. Radio remains worldwide the most widely consumed medium, a technology that speaks to everyone everywhere.  To mark the occasion, the DRM Consortium launched its first DRM for Education e-book, as well as the DRM Delivers Education for All Initiative

The DRM education e-book makes a strong case for using DRM for distance learning. As a “one-to many” platform, digital radio can deliver audio and text over vast areas.  The book’s publication was also an invitation for anyone interested to participate in an exciting DRM Delivers Education for All initiative.   Please contact: projectoffice@drm.org to participate.
