The CRC, in partnership with the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is co-sponsoring a graduate certificate program in the study of Natural Hazards Resilience. As one of the course offerings, CRC Program Manager Anna Schwab will host a series of talks during the Spring 2021 semester on a wide range of topics related to natural hazards, climate change adaptation and community resilience.

This semester’s events will be recorded, and talks will be made available to the public on this page and the Center’s YouTube page.

So far this semester, we have posted presentations from:
  • Dr. Timothy Beatley of the University of Virginia (“Nature as a Pandemic Response”)
  • Joe DeAngelis of the American Planning Association and Jaimie Masterson of Texas A&M University (“Using Local Planning Tools to Build Community Resilience”)
  • Dr. Ashley Ross of Texas A&M University at Galveston (“Local Governance in the Context of Natural Hazards: What’s Good Governance?”)

In memoriam: Dr. Larry Atkinson

We are saddened to share the news of Dr. Larry Atkinson’s passing on Dec. 22, 2020. Dr. Atkinson, was the Samuel and Fay Slover Professor of Oceanography; University Eminent Scholar in the Department of Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at Old Dominion University (ODU); and also Assistant Director of Research for the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience. He led a project for the Center during its first two years, from 2016-2017, providing invaluable support for stakeholder community engagement for CRC researchers. He and his team also hosted multiple summer exchanges with students from our education partners at Tougaloo College. Dr. Wie Yusuf continued to lead the project in 2018.

Dr. Atkinson was an organizing force in creating the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) at ODU, led the initiation of ODU’s Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative (CCSLRI) and was a founding board member of the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing System (MARACOOS). His research included studies of nutrient supplies, hydrographic variability in eastern and western boundary currents, sea level rise, climatology of coastal waters and high-frequency radar measurements of surface currents.

“Beyond his academic and research accomplishments, Larry was a mentor and colleague to many,” Dr. Yusuf said. “Larry had the superpower of bringing people together in pursuit of common goals and purposes. In building ODU’s CCSLRI he brought together researchers from oceanography, engineering, communications, public policy, tourism, geography, and many others, and creating an interdisciplinary team to study sea level rise and flooding.”

“He had conducted field studies off the US East Coast, Japan, Chile, southern California, and northwest Spain. His many cruises and field studies provided a repertoire of interesting stories that he was always willing to share.”

CRC to hold annual meeting in April

The CRC will hold its annual PI meeting virtually on April 21-22, convening researchers, educators and federal stakeholders. Attendees will hear from project leaders on their progress in the first six years of Center work and potential new directions for their work in the future. They will also hear directly from students involved in Center projects about their experiences and career paths spurred by involvement with the CRC.

CRC in the news

In the last few months, CRC projects and researchers have been featured by our partners and several media outlets, including an announcement that Pam Rubinoff of the University of Rhode Island was named a finalist for the American Society of Adaptation Professionals New England Regional Adaptation Leadership Award!

Carolinas Climate Resilience Conference
planned for May

The CRC is a planning partner for this year’s Carolinas Climate Resilience Conference, held May 10-12 mostly in a virtual format, with a few select events also held in person at the Durham Convention Center in Durham, N.C. Held biannually, the event supports on-the-ground resilience efforts by providing managers and regional experts with an opportunity to share lessons learned and discuss resources and tools for incorporating climate information into their work.

Plenary sessions during the conference will include a panel discussion titled “Living in Interesting Times: The Challenges We Face and Our Inspiration to Act;” as well as a panel discussion about “State and Local Risk Assessment and Resilience Planning.” The closing plenary session will focus on “Climate Change Communication through the Arts.”
