February 21, 2021
This Sunday we will debut the latest St. Peter’s virtual choir project, the hymn, Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah. The text was written by the Welshman William Williams (1717-1791) who was associated with the Calvinist Methodists, even though he was a Deacon in the Church of England. He was a prolific hymn writer who traveled throughout Wales fervently preaching the good news. His hymn, originally in Welsh, serves as a prayer and reminder for us that God is guiding us through this barren land. We can therefore always sing songs of praises. The hymn tune, Cwm Rhondda was written by John Hughes (1873-1932) a Welsh composer of many hymn tunes. He wrote the tune for the 1905 Cymanfa Ganu (hymn festival) held in Pontypridd and named it for the Rhondda Valley in southern Wales.
Music this week will also include the African American spiritual, Deep River arranged by Harry T. Burleigh (see last week’s music notes). The imagery in spirituals evokes the aspects of the life of slavery and the eternal hope for a better life in this world and the next. Our final song will be the first verse of Lift Every Voice and Sing, the Black National Anthem. The text was written by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) a civil rights leader and author and the music was composed by his brother John Rosamond Johnson (1873-1954) a singer and composer who was a leader of the Harlem Renaissance.

4th Annual Food Drive
& (Mostly) Friendly Competition
between St. Peter’s & St. Thomas
|
|
|
As part of our desire to support schools, service agencies, and ministries along the Waters Avenue corridor, we’ve once again accepted the challenge from St. Thomas in Isle of Hope to collect food (especially protein) for the food bank at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church at Waters and Washington Avenues. We will collect food until Palm Sunday (March 28).
Please bring all food bank contributions to the breezeway outside the church office. There will be two drive-by drop-off opportunities on these two Sunday afternoons:
March 7: 12pm - 2 pm
March 21: 12pm - 2pm
Let’s keep the Food Drive trophy at St. Peter’s for another year!

In the coming weeks, you may receive email notifications from a software called Realm. This new tool is being onboarded in the office and will eventually be a great resource for the parish. For now, do not worry! We will educate and invite everyone to join over time. If you receive an email, no action is needed unless you believe you have been added to a group or ministry in error. Email Susanne with any questions or concerns.

For 2021, St. Peter's will provide meals for homeless families with children in the Family Promise program during the weeks of May 23-30 and Oct. 24-31. As with so many things, Covid-19 has changed the way that Family Promise has been operating. Rather than having families come to congregations like ours, our volunteers are asked to bring food to the families at a central location. For convenience, volunteers may team up and bring meals for multiple nights. For example, some congregations bring two meals on each of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights, and then one meal for Saturday night. Other volunteers supply breakfast and lunch items on Sunday to last for the whole week.
In addition to providing meals, Family Promise also asks that congregations consider providing gift cards that can be used to purchase other food items during the week and cleaning supplies to keep the areas safe and clean; and providing a stipend of $500 for each host week to offset the cost of evening and overnight staff, which was primarily covered by volunteers in pre-pandemic days.
If you would like to help out by providing a meal (usually for 10-14 people) or by providing financial assistance, or if you have any questions, please contact Jim Brawner at (912) 257-9680.

Lenten Discussion Group:
The Five Baptismal Promises
|
|
|
Join an informal group for discussion of the Five Promises from the Baptismal Covenant during Lent on Zoom.
The Five Promises we make at our Episcopal baptism are to: (1) continue in the Christian fellowship, (2) resist evil and repent, (3) proclaim the gospel, (4) serve Christ in all persons, and (5) strive for justice and peace (BCP, pp. 304-305).
We’ll review them and reflect on examples from our own lives and recommit to each for about 45 min or so. This is a low-prep or no-prep discussion designed to help us focus on what’s important during Lent, to get to know one another and the Episcopal Church. Class will start Feb 21 at 10 AM and continue on Feb 28, Mar 7, Mar 14, and finish on Mar 21. All are welcome! Zoom info will be the same as Coffee Hour: https://zoom.us/j/107005592
