Zachor Shabbat
The 2nd of 4 special Sbabbatot before Pesach, this week's maftir reading recalls Amalek's cowardly attack upon the weak and weary of the Israelites as they travelled in the wilderness from Egypt to the Promised Land. This maftir is intended to remind us of Amalek's treachery and commands us to blot out Amalek's name. The Rabbis prescribed that we fulfill this commandment once a year by reading this maftir publicly. They chose the Shabbat before Purim to connect the blotting out of Amalek's name with the bolting out Haman's name on Purim. Haman was a descendant of Amalek.
Torah Reading:
Parashat: Terumah
 Ex. 25:1-27:19  Maftir: Deut. 25:17-19
Haftarah: 1Samuel 15:2-34

Please, please, come in costume, at least from the waist up. Try hard to have interesting headware as our heads are what show the most on Zoom. Also plan to bring your own grogger to the Megillah reading. Some DIY grogger ideas include plastic water bottles filled with little marbles or paperclips or tiny screws or coins. Or decorated paper towel or toilet paper rolls filled with the same objects listed above, excluding the screws (they might puncture the cardboard). Seal the ends first with heavy paper and then again duct tape. You could even put a third layer of aluminum foil over the ends for a shiny look. Of course, there is always the old standby of a pan and wooden spoon. Be creative. Have fun! We could all use an evening of revelry.
