The City of Windsor is moving forward with careful re-opening of outdoor skating rinks, as Windsor-Essex has now entered the “Red-Control” zone of the Province of Ontario’s COVID-19 response framework. At this time, no additional service changes are anticipated until public health officials reclassify the region into “Orange-Restrict.”

Windsor Poet Laureate Emeritus Marty Gervais and Poet Laureate Mary Ann Mulhern are planning to bring poetry to the community in an innovative way this year. Windsor’s Resilient Voices is an initiative to celebrate National Poetry Month by placing short poems throughout Transit Windsor buses and select City facilities. All interested Windsor poets are encourages to submit!

 

 

We are looking for diverse residents of Windsor-Essex to help shape the first regional Community Safety and Well-Being Plan by participating in a community survey and attending virtual public meetings. 

The JumpStart Recovery Program will equip twenty-five early-stage small, independent businesses in Windsor-Essex with a $5,000 grant, business continuity planning resources and mentorship to modify their operations and increase the likelihood of business sustainability and growth. Applications are due February 28.

The City of Windsor is inviting all residents, especially those in historic Sandwich Towne, to contribute ideas and suggestions towards the renewal of Bradley Park in the west end. You can find more information about the Bradley Park redevelopment here.

Sandwich First Baptist Church began as an informal church group of former slaves in the 1820's. They worshiped outdoors and in the homes of individual members until a log cabin was constructed in 1847.

The current church was built in 1851 on land donated by the Crown on Lot 22 West Peter Street (located today at 3652 Peter Street). Fugitive slaves worked to construct the new church with hand hewn lumber and bricks. The clay for the bricks was obtained from the riverbank and fired in a hand-made kiln.

Sandwich First Baptist Church was designated a national historic site of Canada in 1999. It represents the villages built by Black congregations to accommodate the growing communities created by the arriving Underground Railroad refugees.
