My journey to becoming a writer

I’ve gotten to know you a little better through all the wonderful replies you’ve sent me, but today I wanted to tell you more about my journey up until now. Fact is, I never considered becoming a writer, so what happened that I did just that?

My name is Kim (OK, you already knew that, but it feels weird to start without saying that), I live in Enschede in the Netherlands. I started writing in 2006 and am currently writing book 11. I write in Dutch and get my books translated, which is also quite a journey. If you want, I can talk about that in a future email.

Writing hasn’t always been on top of my mind. In my twenties, I pursued a career in photography. During my study, I got interested in documentary photography. I am curious about cultures that are different than mine and my dream was to show that people from all over the world are essentially the same. But I have a big problem. I am shy and it felt so uncomfortable to invade other people’s lives to show their pictures to the whole world. That’s why I stopped photographing soon after I graduated.

I have never regretted doing this study, though. In my final year, I traveled to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. What I experienced with these people has made me the woman I am today and is still a source of inspiration for my stories. And I had a fellow student who introduced me to the world of Tolkien. I am so thankful for that!

Inspired by Tolkien’s work, I started making costumes. And fuelled by my desire to someday work for Weta Workshop, I was involved with some other movie projects (Born of Hope, Ren: The Girl with the Mark, and A Royal Love). I never ended up working for Weta, because I started to write and got addicted to telling my own stories.

So what happened that I started this career? I had a dream about Lumea, the main character of City of Illusions. Shortly after that dream, I had free time, nothing planned, and a story idea that wanted my attention. Thus I sat down and started to write. Of course, being a fan of Tolkien and a costume maker, my own story had to be fantasy! That was in 2006. In 2008, my first book was published.

And here I am today. Chatting to people from all over the world who all have their love for fantasy in common. It’s great to see how far I’ve come already.

Because you can read faster than I can write, I have found some new recommendations for you.
  • Shadow of the Crown by Amber Morant is part 1 of the Dragon Guardian Wars. Assassins, Elves, and Dragons. What's not to love?
  • The Lilith trilogy. If you haven't picked up any of my books after reading City of Illusions, this is your chance to buy the whole story with a discount.
  • And I've found a whole load of free and fantastic fantasy books for you to enjoy!

If you want, share with me one thing you are extremely proud of or your dreams for the future. I love to hear inspiring stories from you!

Best wishes,
Kim
