COVID-19 Updates and Resources

USDA, FDA Underscore Current Epidemiologic and Scientific Information Indicating No Transmission of COVID-19 Through Food or Food Packaging

There is no epidemiological evidence out of more than 100 million COVID-19 cases globally that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted through food or food packaging, according to the FDA, the CDC, and the Department of Agriculture. "Consumers should be reassured that we continue to believe, based on our understanding of currently available reliable scientific information, and supported by overwhelming international scientific consensus, that the foods they eat and food packaging they touch are highly unlikely to spread SARS-CoV-2," acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock and acting USDA Secretary Kevin Shea said in a joint statement.

Is Your Garden Ready for Spring?

Late winter is the perfect time of year to prepare your garden for spring.
  • Make sure the soil is just-right for planting and cultivating.
  • A few weeks before you plan to plant, work in any cover crops and blanket your beds with at least a half-inch layer of good compost. This will improve the soils ability to handle water and nourish your crops. Compost offers a nice blend of nitrogen and carbon and will help fertilize the soil.
  • When cultivating the soil make sure the soil is not too wet or too dry. Rain, and gravity can cause soil to become compacted over time, so loosing it before planting should be a priority.
  • Remove rocks or roots with a shovel or digging fork when the soil is dry and crumbly.
  • Finally, apply an organic fertilizer that matches the needs of the crops you plan to plant. Use a small amount of fertilizer for crops like lettuce and spinach raked into the top few inches of soil. For seedlings like broccoli and cabbage, place fertilizer in the individual planting holes.
Taking time early can help to build a garden that will be more productive during the year.
