#1Lib1Ref

The campaign #1Lib1Ref was hosted from 15 January to 5 February. It was the fourth year that this annual international campaign was organized, and it was the second edition of the friendly competition in Canada. Indeed, as part of the international #1Lib1Ref campaign aiming at adding references to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Canada organizes a friendly competition between the Canadian institutions such as libraries, archives, galleries, museums, and universities.

This year, the competition was divided by provinces and territories. Participants from four provinces took part in the competition (in order of the number of references added): Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba.

In sum, 77 people participated in the campaign in Canada. Together, they added more than 1,530 references to Wikipedia in English and French. A total of 420 articles were edited, and 21 new articles were created by the participants during the campaign.

100 years of meteorological data in free access

Wikimedia Canada is conducting a project called “Weather Data of Environment and Climate Change Canada on Wikimedia Commons” funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada aiming at importing on Wikimedia Commons a century of weather data collected from the 8,756 weather stations of the Meteorological Service of Canada throughout the country.

The goals of the project include to reuse and valorize our meteorological heritage on the Wikimedia projects, to influence the rest of the world to import similar data in free access on Wikimedia Commons, and to help to solve certain issues related to climate change that affect us.

Ha-Loan Phan, director of Wikimedia Canada, gave an interview in French about this project to the podcast Mon Carnet of Bruno Guglielminetti. You can listen to it online.
