Multi Best In Show, Reseerve Best In Show American & Canadian Champion

Fleet St Forged At Hampton Court

We are pleased to present Pierce to the fancy on this weeks front cover of ShowScene.

His Canadian show debut was as at Stormont Dundas & Glengarry Dog Association (SD&G) where he was awarded 3 Best Puppy in Shows, his next show was in the US at Montgomery County Kennel Club, where he was awarded Best of Winners from the 9-12 puppy class by Mr Michael Collins, the noted Terrier Breeder (Purston Reg'd).

Pierce was also the recipient of the prestigious "AKC Puppy of the Year 2019" award under April Clyde (Longvu Airedale Terriers) Clay Cody, Dottie Collier, Tom Davies and Patricia Cruz.

As a puppy, Pierce showed such poise and promise we were not at all surprised to see him mature into such a beautiful example of the Wire Fox Terrier standard.

Pierce's sire is the top winning dog of all breeds of all time in the UK, Travella Striking Steel (Oliver) owned by Victor Malzoni Jr (Hampton Court).  His dam is Irvonhill Fleurie (Farrah) owned by Robert Carusi and Hailey Griffith.

In only four weekends of shows in Canada Pierce  was awarded four Best in Show wins and a Reserve Best in Show.  Our thanks to Donna Conod, Kristen Francis, Olga Gagne, Richard Paquette and Elaine Whitney.

RC and I are very excited to welcome Nancy Ball (Whichwire) and Barry Brabant and Peter Ziliotto (Salt Creek) to "Team Pierce"

We are all looking forward to an exciting 2021 with Pierce and I wish to thank you all for your kind words and support.

"The Terrier should be alert, quick of movement, keen of expression, on the tiptoe of expectation at the slightest provocation"

Question of the week...

There have been many posts on social media of late, breeders having trouble getting into see their veterinarian.
The clinic not being available for emergencies, c- sections, no appointments for time sensitive tests, sending clients to emergency clinics.

What have your veterinary experiences been like pre Covid, and currently?

Tanya Ross
Veterinarian USA
I just want to put this out there for all...Veterinarians across North America are drowning. It’s been going on for about 8 months now. We aren’t being mean, we aren’t turning anyone away because we want to. We just can’t do it all. I know for myself, we are working MANY extra hours every single day and fitting in EVERYONE that we can physically handle and more....my staff is exhausted and burnt out.
They deal every day with the clients that we try our hardest to accommodate, but who then get rude and angry because they have to wait.
I understand everyone being frustrated with the scheduling and waiting issues they are experiencing. But just know, for the majority of us, we are doing the best we can physically, mentally and emotionally for you all. So please be kind and be patient

Wendy Doherty
Tanya Ross Just in the interest of having people being more understanding what has caused the increased work load during COVID? Has curbside pickup caused increase work? Are people buying more pets in COVID which increased vet appointments, are you working short-staffed?

Tanya Ross

Wendy Doherty
I’m glad to try and explain...if only we knew the whole answer!
Yes, curbside is definitely more labor-intensive. Our receptionist’s field so many more calls with this than ever before. We, figure an average of 5-8 calls per client from making the appointment, checking in, speaking with the technician, speaking with the doctor and checking out.
That doesn’t even include if there are any diagnostics to discuss with the owner. That’s another 2 calls at least. One to make recommendations and discuss prices, etc. of what we would like to do, and another to discuss findings and go over potential treatment plans.
And true, there are so many people that got new pets during Covid, that there is a huge number of new puppies and kittens to be seen. Granted, most clinics are not accepting new clients (at least around here), so it is mostly just new pets for our existing clients that we are seeing. Add in that people are home more and noticing more about their animals (love the “lumps” they just noticed that we recorded in last year’s wellness exam)!
But, there’s more to it than that. I have friends in other states that have never been under ANY restrictions on functioning from day 1 of this, and they are triple-booked every day.
And I can only speak for myself, but we are not really short staffed for “normal”, only for what is going on right now. We have not changed anything due to Covid, and would love to hire more good people to help alleviate some of the stress on our staff.
I know lots of people have bigger issues than being “too busy”, but I worry about the long-term effects on people in the profession, especially given the history of veterinary medicine and suicides before Covid, ever had an impact. It doesn’t help the situation to have guns and knives involved, and people threatening staff (we’ve had some of these ugly incidents, but other clinics have had it way worse). Definitely not fun....
Here’s hoping things start to return to “normal” for all of us!!!
Keela Lavers
I have Neapolitans. They don't do well going into the vet;s office alone. It’s been a big issue and many of my younger dogs are now terrified of the vet. They sit perfectly for any procedure if I’m there. I understand but it’s also extremely frustrating and sad to see my dogs so frantic and upset through these Covid appointments.
I lost a 16 month old, to bloat because the multiple vets near us who were qualified and able to help, were unavailable due to Covid. It was devastating
Heather Kastner
Our veterinarian retired last year she was excellent. The vets that bought the clinic have been difficult, we fired one and have stayed with the other vet. We were dealing with a very sick young dog and the virus which did not help.
Lu-Anne Clark
My veterinarian office is open for all puppy series vaccines and wellness checks to go home with. They have also been there in any emergency for me, twice this year alone, and I am so appreciative. It is not easy right now for any of us so unless it's something that is a true emergency, be kind to the Veterinarians! I am oh so thankful for mine.
Christine Schorn
I had my Frenchie go into labor at 3am and was in distress. I was turned down by 7 Emergency Vet hospitals before one finally with a lot of begging decided to help me. We lost 3 of 4 babies.
Robin Hughes
I understand that with Covid, however, in Canada this crap had been going on for years and we are getting fed up.
Kate McMillian
I've had a great working relationship with my vets for many years. Loyalty and trust granted usually leads to a willingness in that clinic to go the extra mile when you need them.
Developing a relationship where a vet will leave their bed in the middle of the night to do a section takes time and a lot of work,
It also requires that we accept that our vets will make errors or mis-diagnosis from time to time -- because nobody is perfect. Part of that relationship is to suck it up and move forward, and not be an asshole about it. A lot of breeders sour their relationships by demanding more of their vets than they would expect from themselves in that regard.
Brian Taylor
An Emergency Vet Clinic in Mississauga, Extremely expensive $1400.00 for a two-minute ultrasound!! Tech was on site as it was Sunday, we were told price would be $800.00 on Monday.
JoAnne Mittleman
My vet in San Ramon, California has been doing an amazing job! Yes, I have had to pay a little extra for urgent care visits sometimes but everyone has been excellent.
Kathy Reid
I have 3 clinics that I use for various reasons. All are reasonably priced and I’ve not been turned away. One is a 24-hour clinic so available anytime. I certainly don’t complain if I have to sit in the parking lot a while. Hopefully clinics will allow owners in soon.
Cindy Macpherson
Our vets are all leaving our clinic. Not so much COVID related, just better opportunities elsewhere. I lost my number one go to veterinarian last summer. I can still reach her if need be, but it’s a long old trek to her new clinic, I’d lose a dog in an emergency. Now another dear veterinarian/friend is moving on. I’m beyond stressed and heartbroken to be losing these amazing ladies. And, speaking of emergencies, all vet clinics where I live stopped doing after hours calls a year or so ago. There is one 24 hour emergency clinic in my Province. One. With COVID we can’t go in. We don’t know anyone there. And, the trust just isn’t there for me personally. And yes, I’ve had to use their services. Not happy or impressed.
Michele Matheson
My vet Ellwood Park Animal Hospital, has been so stellar as has the Animal Emergency Clinic of the Fraser Valley when I have needed them. Stellar help and tireless service.
Kristin Williams
It is very difficult right now. I brought an older dog to an emergency clinic in Southern California on a Sunday afternoon right before Christmas. She had labored breathing. We weren't seen for nearly 5 hours. I called and called from the parking lot (curbside only in Southern California during the worst part of COVID in late December) and kept reminding them of the fact that she had labored breathing. She was hospitalized that evening and did not make it through the night. At one point, they thought they were discharging her, and then they checked with the vet and told me she was not doing well. No one could keep communication straight.
My girl arrested right after they told me she was not doing well, despite me giving them the go ahead to treat as they had diagnosed. It was a heartbreaking end to a heartbreaking situation. I understand they are short staffed everywhere, but this was absolutely gut wrenching to be in this situation and not get care when we needed it most.
With normal vet exams and appointments, I am waiting weeks for my regular vet and driving two hours each way to my back up vets. One of my favorite regular vets just went off on her own to start a repro only practice, which makes it even tougher to find consistent regular vet care for my dogs.
Paul Clas
We are lucky to have Dr Hugh Scott Kellogg  an hour away in Frederick Maryland. A great and accommodating veterinarian. Being an AKC judge he understands the needs of the dog show people. Locally in Hanover, we have a hard time getting into any vet. Same thing. They try to send you to the emergency clinic for anything time sensitive.
Mia Vavrova
I had an x-ray 5 weeks ago on a pregnant bitch, no issues at all, I have already pre-booked vaccinations for puppies etc. zero problems.
Mary Mackay
Working in a busy Canine Reproductive clinic, I can see how people are frustrated. Breeders, must also do their due diligence in not wanting tests or procedures last minute. We see it all the time where people need an emergency C-section and haven't given us heads up when their dogs are due or they need an hour appointment slot, to vaccinate puppies and they need it done that week and so on.
Since Covid began, every clinic has been overwhelmed with new puppy owners and their own patients needing our care. There are only a few doctors in each regular practice and limited staff that are trying to keep up with the overwhelming amount of everyday appointments. We are all tired. Don't be mad at us, we are trying our best to accommodate.
So please everyone, do your part, book early, do your homework and have a list of emergency phone numbers of clinics in your area. It’s tough times, we will get through this! I'm sad for those people who have lost their pets, it’s something we do not want to see happen that’s not what we are about!
Marilyn Bernard
I had a nightmare C-section last year. My vet was closed due to illness. All four vets in town (my vet is 20 minutes out of town-very breeder friendly and my vet for years) refused to see my bitch when labour stalled after one pup born at 7:30 a.m.
After trying vets out of town as well, I finally got an answer from one who promptly told me she needed a C-section, but she didn’t have time, so to take my dog to the ER vet an hour away. After all that, the ER vet in Nanaimo said they had no time for her so I had to go to the ER vet 3 hours away! We got to that ER vet only to be stalled because they had no “surgeon” vet on hand (this after I called to say I was coming and to get directions to their hospital!) Finally called a second ER vet in the same time who told me to get my bitch there ASAP. Finally, she had the C-section at midnight...we picked her and the surviving pups up at 4:30 and were finally back home at 7:30 a.m. the following day. 24 hours later. 24 hours of worry, wakefulness, 6 hours driving and how many hours in the car waiting, trying to keep the lone puppy warm and fed until the final ER vet took him in to care for as well. Losing 3 out of a litter of 6. TOTAL COST $5500.00 without factoring in the cost of the cost of gas, and lost wages for my husband to drive me.
In closing, I realize the vets are busy right now, but I do know that only a few years ago, if your dog needed an emergency C-section during business hours, that trumped wellness checks or puppy shots which were not life threatening. I personally know this from experience. Which is why, I followed my vet out of town, when he opened his own practise.
Genevieve Munro
My clinic has still been great and I know they are under a great deal of pressure right now, and working in team shifts due to members of staff with immune compromised issues.
I’m sorry that so many people are having difficulties but remember vets already have an extremely stressful job in normal times. I’m so full of gratitude for my clinic, especially as I had to say goodbye to two dogs in 2020, and they had our back and continued to euthanize with care and dignity. These are extremely unprecedented times.
Fran Mack
It’s terrible. They take your dog from you which I understand, but then they bring dog back with a ridiculous vet bill, bag of meds and no consultation from the actual vet. Other vets won’t take new clients.
Susan Larnie
We have had no issues with our vet they try hard to accommodate. All through Covid they have always let us come into the appointments with the dog thank goodness. But, it is a smaller clinic as well which is why we chose it. But I have read so many people having issues with their vet clinic, so I feel lucky and hope that doesn’t change.
Amanda Lougheed
Our vet clinic did 3 price increases from between 14%-48% for services within 9 months.
Vanessa Fuller
We’ve been lucky. Even when they didn’t have a free appointment that day, they had us drop our guy off and fit him in when they got time between clients.
Marcie Duncan
Potential possible GI blockage yesterday (dog hasn't kept anything down in 24hours) and was told sorry no time to see you at my regular/repro vet heartbreaking.
Carla Antal
I have had no problems ... can go in to the apt and wait for consultation and if need anything further done ... with exception of the 2 months at the beginning last year.
Christina Rozema
No vet in my area is available after 11pm for any emergencies — closest one then is 1 1/2 hours away.
Decision making around C-sections is definitely impacted by that.
Priscilla Kornelson
It took me almost a year to get my dog in for a laparoscopic gastro-plexy. It was postponed multiple times due to Covid. He just finally had it done. Vet emailed me Thursday and we went in Friday morning. The vet did speak with me directly in person both dropping off and picking up which I appreciated.
Thankfully I haven't had any emergencies with my dogs in the last year.
Johanna Marie
I've been able to get into my vet but I can't accompany my dogs and I don't find the service the same. It would be nice if they could at least offer video call service.
Sonya Young
There is no emergency vet service in the Cowichan Valley anymore. Our vet has gone "corporate" and is not at all the same place.
Brandi Allan
Central Nova Animal Hospital has been absolutely fantastic!!
Tari Yates
We just moved to New Brunswick in July, and had interviewed a couple of vets but hadn’t had the need for one yet. December 6 a stuck puppy in a maiden bitch. Called 3 vets only one picked up. Went in at 3am (Sunday) vet worked and got puppy out and let us stay until next 2 pups were born and we headed home. As luck would have it next two pups were dead on arrival, so I called again and headed in, they were there with other emergencies, so got there and right in to a c-section ended up with 7 live pups and a bill of $1600.00 total. Let me add we had never been to this vet’s office before and we were treated like long time clients. They are 45 minutes away and we drive by probably 6 other clinics to get there, and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Islandview Vet Clinic. New Maryland. NB.
Stephanie Horan
Last April in Truro, Nova Scotia, I had to have an old dog euthanized. We were in lockdown to the extent that no-one was allowed into the clinic, exams and treatment were being done out in the car park, and if the animal needed further treatment it was taken into the clinic by the staff, no owners allowed. But, I was so obviously upset about my old girl they allowed me to carry her in and stay with her, an act of compassion I won't forget. This vet, Central Nova, was recommended to me by dog show people when we first moved to Nova Scotia, and I have nothing but praise for them. They respect my knowledge about my breed, and know that I don't waste their time with trivial ailments, that I can deal with myself. They also respect my views on vaccination timing!
Vanessa Lobo
Most local vets have no standard. Maybe they are good enough to give a shot or maybe spay and neuter, but anything else… The cost of local vet care has gone up astronomically and the level of care is not up to par. Sorry, just my experience and if I had not stuck with my vet in Toronto I would have lost two dogs for no good reason other than mis-diagnosis.
Don French
Never had an issue, even in Covid times.
Shawna Coe
On July 2, Ottawa vet clinics refused my bitch I felt was having problems, to them she didn’t meet Covid protocols as not in distress. Because, my girl wasn’t pushing she wasn’t considered an emergency.
My own vet took her first thing and saved puppies but I lost my best friend, Our puppies were saved but mom died and I would choose her over the puppies any day! (It’s been 7 months and I’m still just heartbroken) I have not bred another dog during Covid since.
Debra Abelovsky
I’ve been super lucky. I have developed a wonderful relationship with my vet over the years, and a simple text to her (owns the practice) and I have whatever I need. But, I have seen lots of posts on social media about people struggling.
Dallas Drury
I haven’t had any issues during covid with my vet, and my vet tech gets back to me almost immediately via text. They have been overly accommodating for emergencies/last minutes and wonderful, I’m lucky for sure!
Linda Young-Roberts
I was waiting for a referral for an ophthalmologist, for a week to only get a call not accepting emergencies now and now waiting on Ontario Veterinary College.
LeeAnne Kiefer
I have used the same clinic for 30 years, large and small animal practice 24-hour service. I’ve had no issues.
Rebecca McAuley
I had an appointment to have my dog’s ears cropped, canceled due to Covid restrictions and now the vet tech says they won’t do it because the dog is too old. Never mind, that we don’t have to worry about posting etc. because the ears are already erect.
Sylvia Haavisto
Over the past 10 years it has gotten more difficult to access my vets over the years. The client base for them have grown and appointment times are difficult to secure, but now with the pandemic it’s awful.
I am very thankful that I have a vet that can squeeze me in when I have a pressing issue but the relationship that I used to have with my vet(s) is no longer there...overworked and overwhelmed. Repro vets are a different issue.
Elizabeth Numbers
My vet who I considered my every day Vet retired, I really miss her. My reproduction vet has now become my vet for everything, she’s been great I’ve needed two C-sections and haven’t had any issues with getting them done. She’s been excellent with communication. But I hated that I wasn’t present for either C-sections, and that I wasn’t able to go in with my puppies for their first shots.
Daria Edgecombe
Not good in St. John’s Newfoundland, an appointment can be a 2.5 week wait. Limited number of walk-in appointments and after that, you are on your own and have to go to the ultra-ultra expensive, ER Clinic here. Clinic hours are shortened due to Covid. Vets taking time off so limited number of vets. Right now, I cannot get through to my vet on the phone and often the voicemail is not working. When it is, I leave a detailed message of exactly what I need and they call back later when I’m not home, and say we are returning your call and I have to start the process all over again. Clients are desperate. They use the text number for curb side pick-up and then get admonished for it on face book. God forbid you voice your opinion as then you are accused of being abusive and bullying. I just lost a 12 year old Cocker to Lymphoma. On top of worrying about her, I had the added stress of wondering if I was going to be able to get care for her when I needed it. It’s so bad here...I can’t even describe how much anxiety it causes me. Our exam fee here now is $88,00 plus tax. I carry Trupanion on them because that ER Clinic is insanely expensive.
Krystal Mason
The level of care in Canada is so substandard compared to the United States. I actually like my vet, but there isn't to my knowledge any practices available on call to support us. I actually just went through this, a bitch overloaded with puppies so good chance of inertia. Whelped the first puppy using every trick in the book to get him out. 2nd puppy after 1.5 hours of active labour called Alta Vista and let them know I was going to try for 30 more minutes and would head in, but needed to know the status of surgical team I'm a one hour drive. They had E.R vets surgeon on call. After the 30 mins called to let them know I'm on my way, please prep for surgery. Head to Alta Vista arrive, and the tell me vet tech went home sick, can't do surgery, they didn't write down my phone number so couldn't call me, they could evaluate my bitch but had to go to Lola.
Get to Lola, surgical team there thank god, quote $4700. They take my bitch and single puppy whelping at 11.30pm. Get call at 2am all 6 puppies alive surgery went well. They won't release the bitch after she is awake because she is on IV pain meds. I say ok, let me know maybe 1.5 hours so I drive home. Call at 3am for update they say 5am. Call at 5am she is still on IV meds, I ask if puppies have nursed, No. The first puppy whelped at 7.30pm and hasn't nursed since I dropped off at 11 pm!!!! I drive in pick up the bitch and pups at 6.45am they look dehydrated and two small ones not in good shape. Took me 12 hours to get them stable with full bellies and hydrated. How is this level of care acceptable on any level? But what options do we have?
Kelly Tomkin
I had a dog who had a stroke, and who unfortunately needed euthanasia. Wanted me to wait 3 days for an appointment.
Kevin Colledge
20+ years with my vet. She is always, always, there for me and for my dogs. As is the staff. Goes above and beyond.
Debbie Brick
I had to wait a week for an appointment for a bitch passing blood with a UTI. Thank God, I had some appropriate antibiotics in the cupboard to bring with.
Mary-Ellen Harvey
My vets have been great through this past year. I was able to get progesterone testing done during the first lockdown in April, fellow breeder was still able to get tails and dewclaws done around that time as well. They held a heart and eye clinic last October and I got in a month ago for x rays and thyroid testing. Puppy visits last summer were done with me standing outside the building and watching through a side door of the exam room so I could still talk to the vet while she did them. I have had blood draws and vaccinations done in the parking lot so that the dog did not need to go inside the clinic.
Kay Nickle
No problems here.
Rhonda Holloway
Our veterinary clinic is amazing, the only thing I miss is not being able to go in with them for a c-section etc. I have heard that it’s the most stressful time for them, and they are extremely overworked. Everybody’s getting new puppies etc. so a lot of them aren’t even taking new patients.
Joanne Matheson
My veterinary experiences in Nova Scotia so far, have not been what I had hoped for. Shout out to the Paris Veterinary Clinic in Paris, Ont. who are awesome and we miss them terribly.
Wendy McKay
I've been with the same independent vet in Pakenham for 40 years and service is wonderful.
Al Matheson
It has come down to money in a number of instances and stupidity in others. Would you send a child into the doctor’s office on its own, (I’m not saying pets are children) but the animal cannot speak for itself, and there is a lack of communication, in today’s environment.
Lorraine Norris
I've been with my vet for 30 years now, they have been doing the best they can during these uncertain times. I've had no problems for urgent care or emergencies. Routine shots take a little longer, but I'm ok with that. They have been true front-line workers as well in my books, they are tired and over worked trying to do the best they can to keep us safe, themselves and their staff safe and give the compassionate care my dogs need. If they have an off day and get a little cranky, I'm ok with that. I have those days too. Bottom line, we are all Covid fatigued and being kind, is the best way to deal with it
Pat & David Gignac
I am not happy with the stay in your car while they take your dog into the clinic. Mistakes are made through translation and misunderstandings. If I can see my family doctor, I am pretty sure I should be able to see my vet. Wear a mask, social distance and wash your hands.
Lynn Gore
Saskatchewan lacks in so many ways. Shows, dog clubs and breeder friendly vet care that is open and available is irreplaceable. Regina area, specifically has had a number of vets that were dog show breeder savvy retire, and not have someone able to carry on in there ever important vacant shoes. It’s unfortunate in so many ways. If someone is willing to make an effort to relocate to Regina I feel strongly - in no time clientele would be yours for the taking.
Waneta Leishman
Our clinic has gone above and beyond throughout all of this. When I took the puppies for their first shots they have an outside access room that was used so I could be there. They then booked the puppies for their next set so I knew I had an appointment no fuss no muss! My clinic is also the emergency clinic for us as well. Love the vets and the technicians.
Esther Hall
My vet is a gem! Always makes time for me, (even emergencies). I go in with all my animals. Just wear a mask and hand sanitize. They do keep numbers down in the waiting room for distancing, which is right.
Katie Goliboski
Had a horrific event where no emergency clinic would see my girl for a c section, and the one who said they would, made us wait 45miutes. We lost 10 puppies in utero.
Mary Korevaar
I am unhappy that so many vets are not doing emergencies anymore, and we get routed to London emergency. I love my vet, I really do - she had one of my puppies. So, I'm not complaining about her, per se. She bought the clinic, she's a young mom of two. I understand that offering emergency service for an entire client base when you're one person is hard. I was attending another clinic for a while after I moved, and they have 6 or 7 vets working there and they stopped offering emergency service. That, I do not understand. When it can be more spread around and they can take turns on call, I think it sucks to stop offering emergency service. I did go to London emergency once since Covid and it was a 12 hour wait. My regular vet had advised us to go, she sent me the bloodwork from earlier that day so I'd have it for emergency, but they didn't consider it that much of an emergency so we left and saw regular vet first thing in the morning. I feel bad for owners of pets that do not have transportation to get to a regional emergency clinic - what in the world do they do? I have had to euthanize one during Covid, and I consider myself very fortunate that my regular vet allowed us both in to be with her. I know that someone there is high risk, and they know that my husband is in the states every week as a truck driver so he makes people nervous. We gowned up, sanitized, masked, etc. and were able to be there together, and I appreciate that.

Even the London Emergency clinic is refusing patients. My girl bloated quickly and severely and they told me they were full, this was 4:30 pm. In a panic I called my vet (that I had just started with) and she said it is getting really bad. She took her and stayed until 11:30 pm to get her stabilized and London refused to even take her overnight for monitoring.
I was told to take her to Brantford. Another night my girl stepped on something while running and came up lame. All I could see was a tiny puncture mark but her pad and leg blew right up so I rushed her to emergency. Sat in the car for hours only to be told that they were busy and she wasn’t critical so best to go home and see my vet in the morning. I got her in and it turned out to be a deep and large wound but the infection had closed it up. By the time I got to my vet green pus was pouring out of it. It had to be stitched it was so large. It was lucky the poison didn’t get into her bloodstream. My vet said that more and more people are being turned away and have heard from others, it is because it was bought by the VCA!!!

2 weeks ago, my 20 month Staffordshire Bull Terrier crashed. I came home to vomit, diarrhea and her flat out. My vet could not get from satellite clinic to mine for 2 hours.  I called 2 other clinics and was told they could not see her because another vet has. This was due to Covid. Bull. By the time my vet saw her my girl was in shock. She ended up fighting for her life. She was not stable for surgery so we had to stabilize her first. She had hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, pancreatitis and a twisting bowel. It was caused by a hoola hoop she chewed up.

I am hating having to wait in my car, however I found an amazing vet in London. He gave me his private cell # so I can text him when I have whelping questions since he is familiar with delivering puppies (although not a repro vet), but is knowledgeable, very respectful, takes his time to chat and talks to me like I am not an idiot (I found so many vets are condescending and many vet clinics are against breeders). I tried several vets before I found Dr. Tucker and I cannot say enough about him... However, with Covid it is frustrating not to see him in person, but have to speak to him by phone.
Karen Cram
I have had the same Vet in Pakenham for almost 22 years. She is awesome!! I have had 2 C-Sections (March and October 2020) and was in the Clinic for both. However, I have told her that when she retires, I stop breeding. It is HORRIBLE out there.
Andrea Robins
I have two Clinics I deal with. One for all my regular care and one for repro. Both have been beyond amazing! Do I miss going in with my dogs? You betcha. But at both Clinics the Vets and support staff have been really great dealing with how hard this is.
Marnie Ritchie
Try getting hold of a vet in off hours. I’m fighting to keep 2 newborn puppies alive and it’s a weekend. Only place to even talk to a vet is an hour away and the fees are beyond my means. The pup would be dead by the time I got there.
Nancy Skyba
I called my regular vet when I got my puppy at 8 weeks. Called to book 12 shots, was given an appointment 1 month AFTER I needed. I changed vets because of the fact they can't get me in for anything. New vet is now also slammed but can accommodate me. I called to book my puppies 8 week vaccines the day they were born. They squeezed me in as they are now booking into MAY!!
Shannon Scheer
In recent years my vet care has been exceptional. Since Covid? Well I must admit I have spent the greater part of the lockdown sitting in vet parking lots for hours on end. Not being able to be with your bitch during a c section is enough to NOT make you want to breed.
However, the four clinics I have dealt with, (2 in Calgary, one in Red Deer and one in Edmonton) have done a very good job during Covid. I do think that the Vet clinics are doing the best that they can with the circumstances.
My problem however lies in the fact some of our most prolific clinics have now been bought out by VCA. THIS is what is causing the drawbacks to our services.  We no longer have the client-doctor relationships. Old time vets are replaced with new interns. Knowledgeable reception staff have been replaced with staff who work for less. Prices have gone through the roof since the VCA came into the picture.
I have no problem driving four hours to see specialists I trust, rather than support a local VCA clinic. In my opinion, since the VCA takeover, this is what is causing all of our current problems. It has very little to do with Covid protocol.
Thankfully we still have a few great Veterinarians that refuse to sell their clinics.
Brad & Christina Heard
We have been very blessed with hugely supportive and tremendous Vet care. This continued through all of this dreadful Pandemic, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.
Adele Macaskill
I must have the best veterinarians in the world! I have been a client at both Pet Hospital on Main in Uxbridge, and East Oshawa Animal Hospital for a long time and over the past spring and summer both have been there for me every time I have called. Dr Lee at Pet Hospital on Main has been awesome with my senior girl and saw her on the very day I called about an eye issue. Dr. Lee took time to examine her and explain to me what was wrong and we booked follow-up appointments with no trouble.
As for East Oshawa, there could be no one kinder than Dr. Hillis and with Mary’s help MeToo is well again. It was a long spring and summer of emergency calls which were met with an immediate appointment. Whether it was Dr. Hills or one of the other doctors they knew me and my girl. I truly believe she is still with us because of their care and attention. Not once did they turn me down for an appointment on the same day.
When I read of the challenges, others are having with their veterinarians I realize how fortunate I and my Old English Sheepdogs are.
Marina Kuefler
I chose not to breed a litter last year and I have put off my spring breeding again this year. Sitting in the car while my girl is put into a stressful situation alone just doesn’t sit well with me. It’s all curb side where I am in Alberta.
Marilyn Blanchette
I have complete faith in the repo at Crestwood. Had breeding with shipped semen right at start of everything closing and then a c-section. My girl knew them and I had no issue with them taking her. I see they now allow 1 person in. My regular vet has also been letting in 1 family member since June. Love both my vets!!
Kelly Morris
In the Okanagan an American conglomerate VCA has been buying up clinics and if you have an after-hours emergency you are sent to one clinic in Kelowna. That is terrible for people who live elsewhere. It's a shame.
Marnie Harrison
My vet is awesome. Fortunately, the clinic is an “independent,” and has chosen to offer ongoing availability for as much as they can, including emergency C Sections. The clinic is small, so owners can’t go in, but the vet always comes out afterwards to give a recap if needed.
Elyse Fernets
My old clinic used to be amazing. Then they were bought out by a conglomerate (not VCA) and during the initial shut down they asked me to book an appointment for the following week to euthanize my 16 year old dog who was in heart failure. I had been a good client for almost 15 years and I haven’t been back since.
Janice Lamontagne
Our vets no longer do emergency, we have to go to emergency clinics, where they try and turn you away, to drive another 2 hours with a bitch that needs a C-section.
Nancy Anstruther
I am blessed with the world’s best vet. A couple of days ago we had a small emergency, and we were saying that if we had to deal with some of the horror story vets we’ve heard about, we’d probably quit breeding.
Olivia Hudson
The veterinary industry as a whole is very overwhelmed right now, due to restrictions and increased demand. As well, there is currently a Vet shortage in Canada.
Liana Maloney
We are fortunate to have a clinic who goes out of their way to ensure we as breeders, get the required care needed from progesterone to Vaccines and Emergency Care. I worry that they will burn themselves out trying to take care of all their clients. I really appreciate them!
Susan Milton Lloyd
I had a horrible experience in November, Boston Terrier requiring an emergency C-section. I took her in at 11:35 PM to new Fish Creek now VCA, finally section done at 5:30 am not a soul but myself in parking lot. I got to watch staff though open blinds having a good old time including the young vet in
charge of my girl, needless to say loss of one puppy, thankful for the remaining 2 puppies, were good by the grace of god. Clinic i off my list, if COVID continues I will retire.
Verona Paterson
SAVE Veterinary Clinic in Okotoks, Alberts has posted reduced hours of operation. And, if you need an emergency C-Section, you have to go to an Emergency Clinic in Calgary, that charges up the wazzo!!!!! And that's just to walk in the door.........wait till you get the rest of the bill in the morning.
Bonnie Hetherington
Both my vets in Red Deer have been awesome. They are being stretched to the limit, and I appreciate all they've done for me and my Dalmatians. Hats off to both Piper Creek and Cedarwood.
David Clarke
How about trying to find competent caring vets if you move?  even with references from other breeders ... We have had a hell of a time in the Okanagan, BC and are just now after almost two years and a few yelling sessions with certain money hungry people who call themselves vets, have found a good general practice vet, but have yet to find a real repro vet that doesn’t work bankers hours, and then try to send you to their associates emergency clinic for services they could perform but choose not too on certain days ... and have you pay three - times as much ...
We still are utilizing our Edmonton area repro vets even from south of Penticton as I just don’t have the time or energy to go through the utter BS I went through trying to find one within even 200 Kms of where we live ...
Leanne MacIver
I’m working hard with the one of the last clinics here NOT owned by VCA, but it’s challenging. I’ve had 2 very sick dogs in the last 18 months, both that I had to take to emergency - a drive over a mountain pass, - because the clinic is not equipped/willing to deal with it during regular hours as they are so booked up. $12K later, one lived, one did not.
More than once I’ve made that drive in the middle of the night. I’m still on a waiting list for a tooth extraction - 2 months and counting and the dog is living on antibiotics. I had such a great vet in Winnipeg, I never thought I would have these kinds of challenges here.
VCA is not improving care for purebred dog owners in this area, with literally no interest in any reproductive work. Sad.
Cherie Holmes
I am on Van Island, and travel to the mainland to a vet. With an emergency pyometra, I was told to come back in 4 days!!!! I went to the mainland and had the life-saving surgery the next morning...god forbid I run into a bloat situation...
Carol Graham
I have been very fortunate as I had a Vet for over twenty years who was absolutely fantastic with me. He retired and moved to Kelowna, so I was on the search for a new Vet when I found one in a small town north us that actually went through school with my last one, and they are still really close friends. They are very much alike, and being in a small town did not have to shut down at all so business as usual.

Behind The Scene With...

Name: Dr. Gail H. Forsythe
Where You Live: Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Breed: Chow Chows, Japanese Chin, and Pekingese
Lionheart [1975] CKC Perm. Reg’d.
CKC All Breed Judge

1) Through the years the purebred dog fancy has changed greatly, what do you miss the most?
I miss a system that rewards dogs, and their breeders, for outstanding merit, rather than the perceived quality of a campaign. I welcome a systemic change that rewards dogs for their ability to give us goosebumps, regardless of breed. I love the dog that makes you take a second look, because of the dog’s high degree of correctness and attitude, in relation to the breed standard. I am concerned that our current system is so heavily influenced by travel, advertising, bias and access to income.
In 1967, I was naive when I entered my first dog show, with my $40 purebred CKC registered Samoyed. Now, I realize that all of those influential factors were present, but I believe, to a lesser degree. Canadians have bred and owned dogs that are competitive at the highest international levels. Some of these dogs have risen to top dog status in Canada; others have been overlooked because of the owner’s inability, or unwillingness, to compete on an uneven playing field.
I would like very much to see systemic change that rewards purebred dogs, and the breeders who strive to produce them, for their functional merit, good health and excellent conformation in relation to their breed standard; and nothing more.

2) If you could give your 20-year old self… Advice today, what would it be?
This is a difficult question for me. I could say: “If you want success, stay in one place and use your resources to focus on one thing." On the other hand, I’ve lived in 6 cities, 2 countries, focused on 3 breeds, enjoyed 4 career paths, and enjoyed every minute. Upon reflection, I’d recommend Dr. Mark Norman DVM’s safe and concise advice: "don’t look back".

3) What makes the difference between a good dog and a great dog to you?
As mentioned above, the great dog is the one that makes you take a second look, because of the dog’s high degree of correctness, distinctive breed traits, attitude and breed specific movement. Add top physical condition, a clean coat that conforms to the breed standard, responsive eyes, and you’ve got a winner.

4) In 2020 we saw fewer shows with all the cancellations, those shows that did go on saw larger entries in many breeds. Would fewer shows be better for the purebred dog fancy?
I don’t think the sport suffers from too many shows. It’s not the number of shows, but what occurs at the shows, that impacts the fancy.

5) If you could give all clubs one piece of advice from an exhibitor or judges point of view, what would it be?
Communicate, communicate, communicate — always in a respectful manner. Ensure that all participants know what is expected of them; and what they can expect from your Club.
If I may be indulged with a second piece of advice: do not skimp when hosting an event. I will happily pay double or triple the entry fee, to ensure my physical safety, unload in a calm organized manner on a solid surface, instead of in mud or gravel, avoid over-crowding, and keep my dogs healthy. Clubs often set themselves up for litigation, by not hiring temporary workers to ensure that grounds and premises are hazard free; and to enforce boundaries. Given many Clubs are not incorporated, members are needlessly putting their personal financial security at risk. There is no rationale to justify that outcome, when exhibitors will dig deeper, if required to do so. The World Dog Show entry fee is about $100 CND per dog; for one show day. Over 22,000 exhibitors attend World Dog Shows. I believe that if asked, exhibitors will pay more than $30 per dog in Canada, to support a quality and safe show site.

6) Name two dog people you would like to pair on Dancing with the stars?
That’s a funny question…the late Anne Rogers Clark and Ed Biven.

7) Should more attention be paid by exhibitors and judges on proper breed presentation and breed exams in the ring?
My observation is that most exhibitors try their best, to present their dog with the best degree of expertise possible. Inexperienced exhibitors are often very nervous and self-conscious. They may not have had the opportunity to develop their handling and grooming skills, let alone breed specific skills.
Who is responsible for mentoring novices? Is the onus upon other competitors to demonstrate good sportsmanship and raise the bar, by showing a novice competitor correct breed presentation skills? Or, upon the professional handler, who has worked for years to acquire knowledge and clients?  Or the judge, who has limited time and who would probably be chastised by an AKC rep for turning the examination into a handling class? Or, the breeder of the dog, to ensure the kennel is well represented? Or, should novices expected to learn the hard way, and then remain loyal to a sport that was not forgiving. I’d like to turn this question around and ask, who have you helped the most to learn about the specifics of your breed, and why??
It is unfair to expect the same standard of expertise from a judge who has not had decades of first-hand experience with the breed; as a breed specialist. Breed clubs can assist judges to understand the specifics of their breed, and how to conduct a thorough examination, by ensuring that their judge education materials include those details; and are easily accessible on the Club website. If breeders and breed Clubs want judges to do a good job with their breed, ensure that educational materials are easily accessible on your website, and on a without charge basis.

8) What has been your favorite series, movie or book, you have enjoyed through Covid time spent at home?
I really enjoyed the Australian series Wentworth. The villain's diabolical mind is so intense!

9) What can each of us do to help ensure that our sport will rebound and prosper after the pandemic?
Continue to breed great Canadian dogs, be kind to one another and find a way to motivate the companion dog owner to attend conformation shows. I’d like to see breed specific function tests at shows and more oral critiques, so that people have something to hear and learn from ringside.
Pet owners abound by the thousands; they will pay to watch a great dog event. Running in a circle, and receiving a ribbon, is only of interest to the person on the end of the lead. If we don’t change our shows to offer value, so that people will pay to observe, learn and participate, then dog shows, and purebred dogs, become meaningless.

10) The year 2020 taught you what?
That I was pushing myself too hard with travel, breeding, showing and a full time law practice; that it's ok to do less. Here’s hoping 2021 will be a more balanced year for all of us. Thank you for the inviting me to share my comments.
