National Trust Tree part of Cambridge's Cool Canopy

A River Red Gum in Marlow Street Wembley has been added to the National Trust Register of Significant Trees.

The red gum is estimated to be between 80-90 years old. While a classification by the National Trust has no legal significance The National Trust hopes that all significant trees, it has classified, will be conserved so their value as part of this State’s heritage may continue for the benefit of the community.

This tree, and thousands of others, form what is known as the 'Urban Canopy' relating to the amount of tree coverage in the Town of Cambridge. The retention of the canopy is vital to lessening the effects of what is known as the 'heat island' effect that emanates from the urban built environment containing the likes of tarmac roads and concrete structures.

To ensure the future of the canopy the Town developed its Urban Forest Strategy in 2020. Despite the ongoing challenges of the drying climate in the south  west of  WA, Cambridge  is  bucking the trend of declining urban canopies with an increase in green cover between 2016 and 2020 of 1.5% while also experiencing an increase in population of around 0.8% and an increase in hard surfaces of around 2.5%.
