ISAPP Newsletter – February 2021

Did you know that ISAPP was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2002? That makes next year the organization’s 20th anniversary. Board members are already planning special activities and a celebration for 2022, so stay tuned!

This newsletter starts with a blog post by ISAPP board member Dr. Eamonn Quigley, which gives an up-to-date summary of what gut microbiota has to do with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The next blog post looks ahead to the future of pro- and prebiotic science, highlighting the main points from a recently published review paper that emerged from a 2019 ISAPP discussion group.

For a humorous diversion, read a blog post that describes how two ISAPP board members answered a rather surprising challenge put to scientists by Benjamin Franklin 240 years ago.

Our featured video this month is on “How to choose a probiotic” -- with guidelines for consumers on how to pick a suitable probiotic from the wide array of different products they encounter on store shelves.

Is the gut microbiota partly responsible for the digestive symptoms of IBS? ISAPP board member and gastroenterologist Dr. Eamonn Quigley is a top expert in this scientific area -- and in this blog post, he summarizes what we know so far about gut microbes in IBS and the potential of gut microbiota focused diagnostics and treatments.

A lively ISAPP discussion group at the 2019 annual meeting in Antwerp brought academic and industry scientists together to address the future of pro- and prebiotic science. Their discussions resulted in a review paper recently published in Trends in Microbiology -- with key points highlighted here by lead author Marla Cunningham.

Sometimes questions from the past can inspire scientists long into the future. Check out this blog post, which describes how several ISAPP board members learned of a scientific challenge identified by Benjamin Franklin over two centuries ago -- improving the odor of the body's "natural discharges of wind" -- and deemed it an amusing, but also relevant, question.
