Towering over us: have your say

Those of us who have lived in South Wimbledon for some time will remember the time when the Brown and Root tower at Colliers Wood was branded “London’s most hated building” by a BBC poll. We were relieved when it was finally renovated into apartments, as Britannia Point. However, we thought this was a sensible use of an old office block that we were told couldn’t be safely demolished. We did not think that this was the beginning of multiple high rise blocks in the area.

We are shocked at the planning application for two further towers next to Britannia Point, one of 26 storeys (taller than the present tower at 19 storeys) and one of 16. This is contrary to the current planning strategy, which states “The Brown and Root Tower should remain the pinnacle building in the centre in terms of height.”

On this basis alone, we think this current proposal should be flatly rejected. We have other concerns, as may you. We urge residents to share their thoughts on the planning application. To be considered, any feedback should focus on “material considerations” such as loss of light, overshadowing, layout, the density of the building. design, appearance and materials.

To do so, email: planning.representations@merton.gov.uk quoting reference 21/P0082 by 24th February 2021. You will also need to provide your name and home address.

We will keep you updated on this proposal. If you received this because you were forwarded it, please sign up here to receive our updates.

Register now for an early postal vote!

It is now confirmed that London Mayoral and Assembly elections are happening on Thursday 6th May. You should have received a letter from Merton Council confirming details of voters in your house and asking if you’d like to register for a postal vote.

We urge you to register for a postal vote. This allows you to vote early, conveniently and safely. The process is simple: download this form from Merton’s website. You can return it electronically, or ask them to send you a paper one.

If you have any problems or need us to help you register, please let us know.

Like the quiet streets around here? The Tories don't.

We are really lucky to have an area with so many “low traffic neighbourhoods” (LTNs). Many years ago, the junctions of many residential streets and Merton High Street, around the Battles and the streets around Norman Road, were bollarded off to prevent vehicles from cutting through them, making them safer for walking and cycling. The council is consulting with local residents on some additional measures, around Merton Park and Charles Road.

We know these are popular with residents. Meanwhile, the local Tories have come out strongly against LTNs, saying that they “have been shown to be a failure wherever they have been tried in the UK”. That’s not what we hear from our residents who live in them or from London-wide surveys that recently showed widespread support! Let us know what you think and what more we could be doing to support walking and cycling in the area.

Finally…Merton High Street, the new Notting Hill?

We enjoyed a recent Financial Times article about Wimbledon, particularly the quote from a local resident that “Merton High Street reminds me a bit of Notting Hill when I lived there 30 years ago”. What do you think?! While there are elements of Notting Hill that we would love to see around here, we also really want our area to stay as a diverse and thriving community.
Thank you for reading! We hope you enjoyed this update. Please share with your friends so we can reach as much of the community as possible. Get in touch and let us know what matters to you so we can feature it.
