World Water Day takes place each and every year on March 22nd and aims to underline the importance of water. While this may sound simple – and, in many people’s eyes, a bit daft – the lack of clean water around the world, alongside the damaging effects of global warming, water pollution and damaged water tables, is more important to understand than ever.

THIS YEAR'S WORLD WATER DAY 2021 THEME IS: VALUING WATER.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO #VALUEWATER? WHY DO WE DO IT? WHEN DO WE DO IT?
AND HOW CAN WE MAKE VALUING WATER A PRIORITY? Water can mean something different to each and every one of us and yet water is critical to all of our societies and economies.
We need water for everything we produce, manufacture and use. We need it at home, at school and for our livelihoods. Water holds great cultural and spiritual significance and yet despite all of the reasons why we need to value water,

EXPERTS PREDICT THAT THERE WILL BE A SHORTFALL OF 40% IN USABLE WATER SUPPLIES WITHIN THE NEXT 10 YEARS.

In the year of Valuing Water, we want to show the world that we are united in valuing water and our different reasons why, and we want to offer an opportunity to learn about water as a finite resource.

RECIPE INSPIRATION

Penne with oyster mushrooms recipe (of course!)

INGREDIENTS

  • 150 g penne pasta

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed

  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced

  • 300 g oyster mushrooms, thinly sliced

  • 70 g sun-dried tomatoes, thinly sliced

  • 100 g French beans, blanched

  • 55 g pine nuts

  • 1 handful basil leaves, torn

METHOD

  • Put the pasta in a large saucepan of boiling salted water and cook for the specified time, usually about 10minutes. Drain well.

  • In a wok or large pan, heat the oil and allow the garlic to infuse for 30 seconds. Add the onion and oyster mushrooms, and cook on a medium heat for 5-6 minutes, tossing occasionally to prevent burning. Add the sun-dried tomatoes and French beans, and mix well with the mushrooms.

  • Add the hot, drained pasta, pine nuts, and torn basil leaves, and cook gently for a further 2-3 minutes before serving.

BOOK CORNER

BOOK REVIEW

Klara And The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

While the announcement of a new book by Kazuo Ishiguro would be greeted with feverish anticipation under normal circumstances, his latest novel comes with an added weight of expectation, as it is his first since being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017. The beauty of Klara and the Sun is how neatly it dovetails with his 2005 dystopian masterpiece, Never Let Me Go, exploring similar questions of love and sacrifice through the lens of sci-fi. Set in the near future, the titular Klara is a solar-powered Artificial Friend, purchased from a department store by a lonely teenager named Josie; her reliance on the sun becomes an allegory for their relationship, with a subtle environmental subtext woven in as well. To explain too much of the plot would be to deny the strange, eerie pleasure of watching it unfold, but it’s a world that feels richly imagined and meticulously constructed, even while its mysteries continue to reveal themselves. Klara and the Sun once again marks Ishiguro as a master of the ache of missed opportunities and lost connections, as he unpicks the tangled web of how we forge relationships with others and how we deny them too. —Liam Hess

Enjoy the rest of February, and soon to be March! See you soon! Stay safe!
