CEZ Improvements Get the STAR Treatment

Thank you to all of the CEZ small businesses, nonprofits, and commercial properties that submitted applications to the first-ever
2021 CEZ Neighborhood STAR Program. We had a great turnout and are pleased to see the wide variety of capital improvement projects being proposed in the district.

We received 11 applications in total, with 11 grant requests (totaling $110,000 compared to $60,000 in STAR funds available) and four loan requests (totaling $95,000, with $100,000 in STAR funds available).

The CEZ Real Estate Committee will be meeting this week to review the project submissions, follow up with applicants (if needed), and award program dollars. Applicants should expect to hear back from us before the end of the February.

If you have questions about the CEZ's Neighborhood STAR program, made possible in partnership with the City of Saint Paul, please contact Angela Casselton
at director@creativeenterprisezone.org or at 612.205.7915.

CEZ Couture Fashion

While it may be a while before the Creative Enterprise Zone is recognized on par with the Garment Districts of NYC and LA, the CEZ is home to a growing list of creative businesses making a name in the fashion industry. Here are just a few:

Hackwith Design House — If you’ve stopped to admire Beatrix*Jar’s “Bird Enterprise Zone” mural on 2340 Charles Ave., you may have noticed an industrious new tenant in the recently renovated building. Founded by designer Lisa Hackwith in 2013, Hackwith Design House releases limited edition clothing designs “every week, with no more than 25 of each made. We've grown to offer additional lines including Core Collection, Swim, Basics, Plus, and Intimates.” Loving their new sunlight-filled home north of Twin City Reptiles and near Oak Tree Arts, Studio On Fire, and Dogwood Coffee, the Design House studio has everything they need. “Every piece of HDH clothing and swim comes out of this studio, so you know you're buying a piece that promotes the U.S. economy and manufacturing. You also know you're buying something made with care and attention to detail, meant to last.” Discover Hackwith’s clothing lines, and commitment to waste-free and sustainable fashion. Tulip Design — Located in the Midway Triangle building at 2500 University Ave., Tulip Design is a costume shop specializing in high-quality, custom historic reproductions, museum-quality restorations, theater and character/cosplay costumes, and more. Having worked all over the world — New York, Boston, Vienna, Nantes, France, and the Twin Cities, among others — owner Sheila Heil and her team of skilled artisans offer a wide variety of ready-made and custom-designed items (some with matching Covid masks!) at etsy.com/shop/tulipdesign, on facebook.com/tulipdesign, and at tulipdesign.net. Their classic theater costume designs (below) just might make you want to burst out in song. Well, maybe.

Prior Works – Home to Creativity

American Can Company, 747-767 North Prior, St. Paul, circa 1925. Minnesota Historical Society collections.

By 1902, the American Can Factory was producing billions of tin cans for Hormel Foods (think SPAM), Swift & Co., Armour & Co, and other global distributors, until its closure a century later. After multiple name and ownership changes, the 500,000-square-foot industrial space closed for good in 2007 until its purchase and rebirth by California developer Orton in 2013.

Now known as the Prior Works building, the old factory is home to many unique creative businesses. Here are just a few:

True Stone Coffee Roasters — With its full-scale roasting facility, bottling line and SCA-accredited training lab (closed temporarily due to Covid), True Stone Coffee Roasters has been "helping coffee bars, cafes, restaurants, and home brewers serve the best brews in the Twin Cities since 2003". With a café in Lowertown near the farmers market, there's plenty to keep St. Paul-proud owners Bruce and Charlene Olson busy as they meet the needs of their wholesale partners and retail customers.

Theater Mu — In their first production since the pandemic began, Theater Mu's "Today is My Birthday” has been extended as video-on-demand through February 28. Written by Susan Soon He Stanton and directed by Lily Tung Crystal, “Today” is a comedy about loneliness in the age of connection. Buy tickets to see the innovative virtual performance or to learn more about this dynamic local theater, dedicated to bringing "great performances born of arts, equity, and justice from the heart of the Asian American experience.” More at theatermu.org.

Collide Theatrical Dance Company — In their Valentine’s show “Stand by Me," featuring over 20 love stories inspired by true events, Collide Theatrical Dance Company has created a virtual presentation that can be streamed by show date or on demand now through February 27. Next up is "Wonderland," a summer-long series of outdoor performances. Located in the Prior Works building at 755 Prior Ave N. (home of Can Can Wonderland, Blackstack Brewing, FlannelJax's, and more), Collide was founded in 2013 by choreographer and director Regina Peluso to bring “a new form of entertainment to modern audiences.” More at collidetheatrical.org.

Upswing Creative — Also located in the CEZ's "upper east side," this "message-first creative agency for companies in industrial and essential products and services" has an impressive online portfolio of their work at upswingcreative.com. Get to know Upswing founders Josh Whitcome and Chris Fink through their lively social media posts (Facebook and Instagram) and company videos.

Supernatural Big Baits — Creative inspiration can take many forms. For Duff Thury, founder of Supernatural Big Baits, it was just a matter of time before his love of custom furniture-making and muskie fishing combined. After first mimicking existing lures but making them much bigger, Thury mastered the techniques and design principles of existing muskie crankbaits before creating his own unique lures. After "six years of R & D, the first HeadLock came to be and the action was nothing short of ‘supernatural’." These lures are so pretty, you might just want to use them for home decor and fishing. Browse their social media  pages or shop online at supernaturalbigbaits.com.

Midway Economic Community (The MEC) — The Midway Public Art Group, funded by a grant from the Hamline Midway Coalition, is looking to create an artist/maker directory for people in the Midway neighborhood (our neighbors to the East.) The goal is to promote the many talented creative types — from painters to knitters, musicians to magicians, and everyone in between — who live, work and go to school in the neighborhood, especially those who may not otherwise have such a platform. As advocates for creative enterprise, we support their efforts to give creatives new opportunities to promote themselves and their work. While the site is not officially live yet, people are asked to fill out this google form and spread the word. Learn more about the Midway Makers project here.

Say It with Flowers

Struck by the beauty and color of murals in San Diego and back home, Saint Paul florist Jessica of JOLENA Floral Studio “made a late New Year's resolution to honor the color I witness, right here at home, with the best medium I know — FLOWERS!”

To date, her "Minnesota Mural Project" has featured two of the murals created as part of the CEZ's inaugural Chroma Zone Mural & Art Festival in 2019 — Cey Adams' “Love” mural at Hampden Park Co-op (928 Raymond Ave), and Eric Garcia’s “Frontier Justice” mural at E-Z Recycling (875 North Prior Avenue). While the flowers may be gone for now, you may also be inspired with a visit to the over 24 murals that now adorn the walls of the CEZ. (Download our handy mural map for an adventure of your own.

Read about Jessica’s floral adventures in her blog at jolenafloralstudio.com, and watch for news about the CEZ's 2021 Chroma Zone Mural & Art Festival in our March e-news.
