The Friends of the Library supports the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library through advocacy and fundraising. The Friends sell donated books and library discards through online sales, the Chandler Booktique (retail outlet located in the library) and book and media sales at the library.
Since 1971 the Friends has donated more than $1.9 million dollars to the library to try innovative ideas. A few examples are the nonfiction neighborhoods, Smartlockers at Oakland Community Center and HyVee, and the Make-It-Lab. In addition the Friends provide annual funding for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, summer learning initiatives and the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery art competition (Topeka Competition/Printed Image).
The Friends is a membership organization of individuals who believe in the library’s mission and spread the word about library programs and services. Members receive newsletters, a discount in the Chandler Booktique, free admission to Friends events and book sales. Memberships are available in the Chandler Booktique or online.
