Fratelli Tutti 83

During Lent, in these turbulent times, how can we persevere in our work for justice with a steadfast spirit, rooted in love?

Join writers from the Jesuit and broader Catholic network as we seek to answer this question, renewing each day throughout Lent our commitment to care for both our fellow human beings and our common home.  Click Here to receive daily emails during Lent.

Emergence
A Creation Care Gathering for Young Catholics

Are you a young Catholic* between the ages of 18 and 39 who...
(Please forward this to the young Catholics* in your lives.)

  • Cares about the climate crisis and environmental justice?
  • Is looking for spiritual resources to help you navigate today's challenges?
  • Has a desire to connect with other young people with similar concerns?
  • Wants to play an active role in shaping a flourishing future for this planet and those of us who call it home?

Join Catholic Climate Covenant for 'Emergence: A Creation Care Gathering for Young Catholics,' on Tuesday, February 23 from 4:30–6 p.m. Pacific Time / 7:30–9 p.m. Eastern Time. This event will serve to kick off our 2021 initiatives with our new Youth and Young Adult Mobilization program, which seeks to inspire, animate, and nourish creation care among young Catholics in the United States. Information on accessing the Zoom meeting will be sent by email upon completing your registration.

Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with one another in meaningful conversation, to learn about and engage in a prayer practice inspired by the Catholic tradition and Pope Francis' Laudato Si', and to engage in collective dreaming about the emerging possibilities for Catholic Climate Covenant's new Youth and Young Adult Mobilization efforts.

*Devout Catholic? Lapsed Catholic? Catholic-curious? Cultural Catholic? Catholic-adjacent? Our generation's relationships to Catholicism are complex, many, and varied. However you define your relationship to Catholicism, you are welcome at this event.

Please fill out this registration and you will be sent an email with the information to join the event.

Last month we hosted the Pacific University Vision Clinic. Eight people, some of whom were parishioners, received exams and went home with new eyeglasses!
Free Food Market
The Oregon Food Bank and St Andrew have partnered for many decades to offer food to people in our neighborhood. The third Thursday of each month is our Free Food Market held in the gym. Anywhere from 25 to 75 households come from around Portland to access this food. Next week we'll be open from 12:30 to 2:00 PM and we serve out of the 8th Avenue entrance to the gym. Please feel free to share this resource with your friends and neighbors.
Here is a fun activity to do alone, with your kids or grandkids.
This was conceived of by the Fossil Fuel Resistance Team at 350PDX.

Break out your pink and red construction paper -- it’s Time to Make Valentines:

Tell Portland City Council to “Break Up with Zenith”!

Portland Tribune report on Zenith expansion.

Please email Ann Turner if you do participate in this activity annturnerpdx106@gmail.com

Have you ever stayed in a relationship too long? Kept on keeping on, even when you knew it was over?  Well, it’s time to show our love for future Portlanders and, as pop songs through the ages tell us…. Wash that crude right out of our hair; get off the [fossil] bus, Gus; Go your own way, Shake it out.

Since 2018, Zenith Energy’s NW Portland oil terminal has been unloading crude oil from trains, storing it in tanks, then sending it through pipes onto ships bound for the Pacific. Zenith operates under permits issued when the property was owned and run as an asphalt plant many years ago.  They have been relying on regulatory loopholes to continue operating and even increase their capacity, in spite of a 2016 Portland ordinance prohibiting the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure and a 2015 City Council resolution opposing oil train traffic.

At every turn, hundreds of concerned citizens have opposed Zenith, but haven’t yet been able to stop this dirty, dangerous, climate-killing operation.  But this spring, some permit renewals are due and the City of Portland has an opportunity to weigh in and possibly stop Zenith.

However. ...we have three new City Council members who may not yet be fully informed about Zenith. Also, members who were persuaded to oppose Zenith in the past (Wheeler and Hardesty) need to know how much we still care.

So let’s send all five Commissioners valentines!

We want them to know we strongly oppose Zenith, and that we will “love” them - as long as they help us stop this climate-busting operation, which threatens the safety of our neighborhoods, future generations, and life in the lower Columbia River Basin.

Break out your pink and red construction paper, or those valentines hiding in your drawer.  Write a short message of love, just be sure it mentions your opposition to oil trains and to Zenith...

Recruit your friends, your kids, your neighbors.

Let’s pile the office desks at City Hall high with valentines!

Here are some ideas for messages -  you can probably come up with better ones!

---------------------------------------

Dear Commissioner,

Please be MY valentine, and break up with Zenith.

It’s a toxic relationship.

-----------------------------------------

City of Roses, home to us all

People and salmon, trees that grow tall

Our river’s at risk, oil trains run amok

Please take some swift action, we must deconstruct.

 ----------------------------------------

City Council:

Love and kisses!

Kick out Zenith.

No more near misses!

--------------------------------------------

Pop your valentines in the mailbox between February 5th and February 10th to:
