St. Luke's Annual Vestry

As noted in recent newsletters, all parishes will hold Virtual Annual Vestry Meetings this year, and St. Luke's will hold our Annual Vestry on Sunday, February 28th, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. on Zoom.

Please fill in the registration form found here. While we would not normally register for an Annual Vestry Meeting, this will assist with preparing for and running the meeting. One of the things the registration form deals with is affirming the Solemn Declaration, which is a Canonical requirement of our Diocese.

A Budget Information Session will be offered on Sunday, February 21st, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. also on Zoom. You are asked to indicate on the registration form if you'll attend that session.

If you normally submit a Vestry Report, you are asked to forward that to the Church Office (officestlukesottawa@gmail.com) as soon as possible.  Many thanks to those who have already submitted reports.

Zoom links for the Budget Information Session and the Virtual Annual Vestry meeting will follow, and reports and meeting meetings will be circulated in the next two weeks.

Please feel free to be in touch with Rev. Victoria or one of the wardens with any questions.

A Tuesday Newsletter This Week...

In response to the current stay-at-home order, only 5 people will offer the livestreamed service: clergy and Cathedral music staff. This is so that volunteers are not asked to leave their homes.

Only three clergy are in attendance for the livestream on Sunday mornings with one member of the clergy staying at home and worshipping online each week. This is Rev. Victoria's week to worship online so know that as your are worshipping from home she will be too.

A Service of the Word for Those at Home

The following service is offered for those setting aside time for prayer and reflection on Sunday morning.

A Virtual Musical Offering

Prelude:  Trio in F   by Felix Mendelssohn
Hymn 486: Love Divine, All Love’s Excelling
PostludeFugue in C major (from Sonata in C Minor)   by Felix Mendelssohn

About 30 years after Felix Mendelssohn’s death in 1847, the Prussia State Library acquired the bulk of his musical estate.  During the Second World War much of it was stored elsewhere to ensure its safety.  Some of it was stored in Kraków, Poland and was only uncovered and first published in 1987!  In this find were several organ works including the “Trio in F Major” which dates from July, 1844.

With the word love synomynous with Valentine’s Day, we choose the hymn Love Divine. We have a video that David Selzer recorded with my phone on February 24, 2019 sung to the tune Hyfrydol, with our sopranos soaring to a high Bb in a descant I wrote way back in 1985.

St. Luke's Storytelling and Social Time
Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. on Zoom

You're invited to drop in to St. Luke's Story Time, Thursdays 2:30 - 3:30
Thank you so much to Laraine Paradis who shared her love of ikebana with us this week.  We had 14 participants -- two from St. Thomas the Apostle, and two from further afield (Anne's Mum and sister).  Laraine helped us all appreciate the way simplicity, space, and structure help us to see the miracle of nature and life even more fully.

One of Laraine's arrangements!

Next week, Anne will share about hitch-hiking and poetry and how they're all connected to faith.  Here's the link.  We hope you'll join.

Do you need support?

Each one of us is experiencing these pandemic days in a different way. If you would like to check in, have a conversation, share a laugh or a cry, or be prayed with, please be in touch with Rev. Victoria (victoria@stlukesottawa.ca or 613-698-6083) to set up a Zoom meeting or phone conversation.

Would you like to connect with another member of the community but aren’t sure how to reach them? Contact Helen Cathcart at familylibrarian@yahoo.ca, or leave a message on the church answering machine and we’ll make the connection.
We can get through this together!

Vestry Reports

Those who usually submit Vestry Reports are asked to do so as soon as possible, and to email them to the church office: officestlukesottawa@gmail.com

While those preparing reports might wonder at first what to include, given that we've been in a pandemic all these months, reports are an important record and it's important to document each year. Thank you in advance for your efforts!

A Joint Parish/Table Initiative For Valentine's Day

With the hope of brightening the days of St. Luke's Table participants, handmade Valentines and gift cards are being handed out at St. Luke's Table today and tomorrow. Many thanks to the St. Luke's folks and their neighbours who initiated this idea and made Valentines. At the time of writing this newsletter, messages of delight and thanks have already been received from St. Luke's Table staff and participants!

Our Diocese

Hello and welcome to COVID Communiqué 39. We have heard the recent announcements from Ontario and Quebec about plans for a cautious reopening. There is still a high level of uncertainty about various factors, from variants of the virus to vagueness about vaccine delivery. We too must be cautious, so we will proceed as follows, across our diocese.

On Tuesday February 16, we will ease our current RED stage protocols with these modifications, if permitted by provincial and local health regulations:

  • The limit of no more than five people in church to record or livestream a service remains, but individuals who offer spoken words during the service (e.g. officiant, reader, preacher, intercessor) may remove their mask while speaking on camera—provided that there is appropriate distancing from others. Please note that singers must keep their masks on when singing.

While we do not plan to move out of RED stage during February, we hope to be able to announce our schedule for reopening for in-person worship on February 22. It is our heartfelt hope we can all move to AMBER by Holy Week.

This approach is similar to the one we took last June, where we chose to delay in-person worship until September, allowing us some continuity and stability before taking on the additional work of holding in-person worship under very strict protocols.

If you have any questions about this or other issues, please contact the COVID-19 help desk: C19helpdesk@ottawa.anglican.ca.

God places us in the world as his fellow workers-agents of transfiguration. We work with God so that injustice is transfigured into justice, so there will be more compassion and caring, that there will be more laughter and joy, that there will be more togetherness in God's world.

(Desmond Tutu)
