Newtown Residents' Association: Monthly meeting

7.30pm Monday 15th February at the Newtown Community Hall, 71 Daniell Street.

This is the first Newtown Residents' Association meeting for 2021. We hope you will join us to talk about what is going on in our area.

The agenda will include:

• Predator Free Wellington will talk about their plans for intensive rat eradication operation throughout Newtown and neighbouring suburbs

• A preview of the Newtown Festival, which is on Sunday 7th March

• A review of the Wellington City Council Engagement Calendar

• Setting the subscription rate for 2021:22 - it is in our rules that we decide this in February, although it doesn't come into force until our financial year begins in July.

Kia Ora Newtown, 6 Constable St, is the new site for the Newtown Citizen’s Advice Bureau

With the Newtown Community and Cultural Centre upgrade proposed to begin in May, WCC have offered the 6 Constable Street site to Citizen’s Advice Bureau, who will open to the public there on Monday 15th February.

This will allow CAB to continue their work in the community while the Community Centre undergoes renovation.

WCC Community Liaison Officer Jared Corston, who was previously based there, will continue work in Newtown and is still contactable by phone and email, and available for meetings by appointment on Tuesday and Thursday.

Last year we heard about Wellington City’s Innovating Streets pilots, funded by Waka Kotahi and WCC. They aim to create more vibrant, people-friendly spaces in our neighbourhoods.

On Thursday 11th February a ‘Placemaking Pop-Up’ is opening outside Black Coffee, 133 Riddiford Street. It will be there for approximately four weeks and the organisers want to get lots of feedback from the community about the best use of the space!

There will be a range of initial activities that include but aren’t limited to:

• Seating and tables

• Live storytelling

• DJ

• A Backgammon Tournament: Saturday 13th Feb 1.00pm – 3.30pm

There will be a similar ‘pop-up’ outside Bicycle Junction, 1 Marion Street, Te Aro opening Saturday 13th February for approximately three weeks, and another outside the new offices of Creative Capital Arts Trust, 17 Allen Street, during the Fringe Festival.
