Dear Holy Cross Families,

The month of February is always a busy month at Catholic schools!  We began with Catholic Schools Week and we continue with lessons and celebrations related to Black History Month, Valentines Day, Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.  Today, we also celebrate 100 days of school.  As we all know, this has been a year of challenges and many changes, but we are grateful for each of these 100 days that we have spent together either virtually or in person.  Please take a few moments to enjoy this short video, celebrating our 100 days together.

Yesterday was the feast of Saint Josephine Bakhita. Her image is hanging on the wall in my office and it reminds me to continually press forward. She suffered much, but her love, hope, and forgiveness were transformational. Like much of this year, things will look a little different when it comes to celebrating Black History, but we will definitely be helping our students understand the many ways African-Americans have contributed to the vitality of our nation and our church.

Unfortunately, Chef Calvin  will not come and share a special culinary meal with our entire school as he has done for the past few years but we are looking forward to welcoming  Deacon Mel at the end of the month for Mass on February 26th.

Looking ahead…

We typically begin the registration process for our current families in early February and we are hoping to begin those registrations as soon as possible but are waiting on further instructions from the Diocese, since this year registrations will be online.  We will let you know as soon as we are able to begin registration.

Next Monday, February 15th, is President’s Day. This was originally scheduled as a no school day, but we need to make up the extra days we took during Thanksgiving break so we will have classes as normal on Monday, February 15th.

On Tuesday, February 23rd, we will have an eLearning day. As part of diocesan-wide accreditation, the Catholic schools office has scheduled a visit to Holy Cross.  This visit involves interviews of faculty, staff and stakeholders throughout the day. Because this process will interfere with regular class schedules, we have decided to use February 23rd as an eLearning day.

This week our 3rd grade class will plan and attend the mass with the 1st grade Immersion and Traditional class. If you have a child in either of those grades, you are welcome to come and celebrate Mass in the church, otherwise you can view the live-stream Mass via Zoom, please look for the link later in this newsletter.

Have a great week!

10 de febrero de 2021

Queridos padres y guardianes,

[Last] week we celebrated Catholic Schools Week. We transferred our weekly School Mass from Friday to Monday in order to begin our school’s celebration of Catholic Schools Week with prayer. The students were invited to wear liturgical colors that day, and we ended the day with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for various classes in the church throughout the afternoon. Tuesday was Spirit WearDay on which students wore Holy Cross School clothing, and also wrote thank you notes to those who have contributed to their Catholic education. Wednesday was Favorite Socks Day, on which the students held a food drive contest for the benefit of our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society food pantry. Thursday was Vocation Exploration Day on which the students wore clothing that represented their favorite college. Friday was Pajama Day on which the students could wear school appropriate pajamas while enjoying various fun activities and an 8th grade-teacher challenge throughout the day…
I extend a heartfelt and robust thank you on behalf of the parish to the teachers and staff of our school who have so faithfully performed their jobs these past months of the pandemic. They have sometimes worked through their personal lunch and free periods, and have covered for each other in numerous ways, when short of staff for various reasons. They have gone the extra two miles for our students this year. On behalf of our parishioners, a most sincere thanks to each and every one of you!
