JULIE LONG OAM - PRESIDENT OF THE CBCA ACT BRANCH

President’s Report February 2021

Hello everyone,

I hope you have all had time to catch up on reading over the holiday break. Also hoping that COVID stays away and we can go back to enjoying face to face networking as we meet up at our events, the first of which is the Night of the Notables. This year it is being held at ALIA House (see the booking form later in the enews). This first event is also a good opportunity to renew your membership and get to attend events at a considerable saving.

If you are a financial member and an author/illustrator please contact our web person Catherine so that she can add/update/promote your biographic details on our website – ctuite@y7mail.com

Happy reading everyone,

Julie Long

News from Pinerolo

Pinerolo is the Children’s Book Cottage in Blackheath which officially opened on 10 November 2010. The newsletter is written by Margaret Hamilton AM.

Below is an excerpt from an email from Margaret about the Awards Foundation:

If you’re not familiar with it, please note that it [The Awards Foundation] is one of the most important aspects of CBCA work. Donations form the principle and this is invested to earn income that will fund the annual awards. You’ll see from the list on the attached form that Benefactors (who have donated $20,000.00 plus) and Major Donors ($5000 plus) are permanently acknowledged.

It has been our practice for some years, especially when an important author/illustrator dies, to honour them by raising $5000 and listing them as a Major Donor (in memoriam). You’ll see several listed on the form.

Christobel Mattingley was one of our most respected authors, winning several CBCA awards, and she is definitely worthy of this recognition. This campaign has languished a bit because 2020 was such a difficult year, but I would like to see it revitalised and complete.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

These monetary prizes are welcomed by the creators as they are a boost to their finances and serve to further their careers. The Awards Foundation means that prizes for the awards are funded in perpetuity.

For more information see below.

My new book The Last Convict was published in early February and is now available for purchase in the shops and online. If you wished for a copy signed with a personal message from myself, orders can be placed through my website here. The cost is $33 plus $10.50 for postage and packaging. It is also available as an audio book with a fine reading by Julian Garner at most outlets.

The Last Convict is an historical novel based on the life of Samuel Speed, who believed himself to be, and is widely accepted, as the last transported convict to die in Australia. Convicted of setting fire to a barley stack and sent to Fremantle on the convict ship Belgravia in 1866, Sam Speed got his freedom in 1871. He lived in Western Australia for another 67 years. He died at the Perth Old Men’s Home in November 1938, on the eve of the Second World War and within the lifetimes of many people still living.

With kind regards

Anthony

Libraries ACT - Story Walk

Enjoy walking? Enjoy reading? How about both at the same time?

Both have great health benefits and we’ve combined them to create a walking route with a difference. Enjoy Libraries ACT’s first ever story walk and follow Erin-Claire Barrow’s retelling of Cinderella, with a page to read at each stop. Starting from Belconnen Library, follow the walk to each stop to find out what happens next. Find out more on the Libraries ACT website where you can download a map to follow (or you can scan the QR code at one of the stops to download it).
Karen Blair Art Auction
Karen Blair is one of WA’s most beloved creators, having presented at A Night with Our Stars (ANWOS) many times over the years.
She is also a generous supporter of the CBCA WA Branch and has donated an original art work – a signed charcoal and watercolour sketch based on her winning CBCA Honour Book When Billy was a Dog, written by Kirsty Murray and published by Allen and Unwin for the WA Branch to use as a fundraiser.
This exquisite framed piece measures 43cm x 33cm and will delight dog-lovers and readers alike. It would look equally at home on a child’s bedroom wall, in a library setting or a booklover’s house.
The work is being offered for silent auction with the winning bidder to be announced at ANWOS 2021 on Friday 12 March. The auction is open to all CBCA Branch members and indeed, the wider public. Attendance on the night is not compulsory for the winner but collection and/or delivery will be wholly at the winning bidder’s expense. The reserve price has been set at $200 and bids will be accepted in $10 increments.

You will find information on how to subscribe to her email newsletter here.

Whilst Judy is no longer doing a Topic of the Month, the archive is available on her website. There is lots to see on her website.
