Fruit!
We have added some new organic fruit options, which I am super excited about
  • Non certified organically grown fresh figs from Berry Nice. Figs are sold in 1.2kg punnets or 500g
  • Non certified organically grown seedless green and red grapes from Twinita of Oranjezicht Food Club who also sources Gideons Flour if you want to get smaller amounts than is currently available directly.  Twinita sells her grapes in 4.5 kg punnets. This sounds a lot, but at the price given and if you have a family, it's surprisingly easy to get through a tray of these!
  • Non certified organically grown oranges and bananas sourced by Metro Organics in Noordhoek.
Cocoafair Chocolate support over 1000 small scale organic farmers in Panama. They bring the beans to Cape Town, managing the whole process from bean to bar. To warrant wholesale prices, we have put their 1 kilo slabs which are brilliant for munching and cooking with and extremely good value when compared with the smaller bars. They also have a sugar free variety using Maltilol as a substitute.
*Maltilol is a sugar alcohol (like xylitol) which allows you to get a sweetness that is close to that of sugar, but with fewer calories. It also doesn't cause tooth decay like sugar does.
Farmer Angus now has an arrangement where Checkers will buy all of his beef going forwards. On the one hand this is sad for the decentralised, regenerative community - on the other hand, we should be proud that he has created a market for grass fed beef in a national retailer. We may have even had a part to play here.

We are lucky, however, to have Bertus, from Meat the Butcher providing Langside meats’ incredible certified grass fed mince and burgers at a marginally cheaper price than Angus was offering alongside Bertus' sublime steaks - so do look out for them. Langside meats is currently the only other certified grass fed beef in the country, other than Farmer Angus. They are focused on Regenerative Agriculture and support a group of farmers who practice in this way.
