The Indigenous Health in Medicine Program seeks to increase representation of Indigenous students in medicine through recruitment, community collaboration and partnerships. It also advises the dean of medicine, to fulfill the social accountability mandate to the maritime Indigenous community. Hannah Asprey, a Mi'kmaw woman from Nova Scotia is the Program Manager. Dalhousie's Medical Admissions 
Change to admission requirements (2021/2022): a full course load (defined as 5 full courses or 30 credit hours per academic year) is no longer a requirement for admission to Dalhousie's undergraduate medical education program.

MCAT Prep: Are you an Indigenous learner with an interest in medicine as a career and considering sitting for the MCAT exam? If so, the Indigenous Health Program, Cumming School of Medicine invites you to register for an information session, hosted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Members of the AAMC MCAT Prep team will be joining us to discuss AAMC MCAT Official Prep resources that are available to you. Register Here

Admissions Presentation:  Do you identify as Black or Indigenous, and are interested in Dalhousie's Medical School? Join us on February 24th at 12:00 Noon for a virtual information sessions on Dalhousie's Medical School Admissions. Please email sarah.upshaw@dal.ca to register.

Indigenous Student Centre: The Indigenous Student Centre helps create a sense of belonging to support your success while at Dalhousie. Our Indigenous Student Advisor provides support and advocacy for all of Dalhousie’s Indigenous students. Click here for more.

Indigenous Health Interest group: The Indigenous Health Interest Group (IHIG) is a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in health-related programs at Dalhousie University. IHIG members share common interests in improving the health of Indigenous peoples and reducing Indigenous health inequities through education, empowerment, advocacy and research. IHIG aims to raise awareness of Indigenous health inequities while enabling non-Indigenous people to become better informed about Indigenous cultures and health issues. Click here for more.

Bursaries and Scholarships:
Indspire Bursaries and Scholarships are available for Indigenous students across Canada. There are awards for all areas of study, from trades to health careers.

Jordan’s Principle Scholarship - Three scholarships ($5000, $2500 x 2) will be awarded by the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada to First Nations students studying at a Canadian post-secondary institution who demonstrate commitment to Indigenous children's health and community service as well as academic commitment and achievement. Deadline to apply is March 31st, 2021. 

Irving K. Barber Indigenous Awards are open to all Indigenous students. Award amounts range from $1000 to $5000.

Johnson Scholarship Foundation Entrance Requirements Bursary: Bursary is open to all Indigenous and African Nova Scotian students wishing to apply to Dalhousie School of Medicine or Dentistry. Students must apply directly to IHIM or PLANS Program managers. 
 
Student Summer Research Program Dalhousie Medical School's Summer Research Program for Non-Medical Students aims to open new doors of opportunity to those living in Nova Scotia of African descent and Indigenous students with an interest in medicine and/or medical research. The program is open to undergraduate students from these communities who are confident that health research will be part of their professional careers. Deadline to Register is March 31st  
JOB OPPORTUNITIES for Indigenous Students 
Indigenous Research Facilitator - Work closely with the Indigenous research community to provide expert advice and assistance in the preparation of competitive grant applications.

Cape Breton university is seeking to hire a Dean for Unama'ki College, who will promote excellence in Indigenous education, research and scholarship, as well as promoting Indigenous culture. Deadline to apply is Feb 22nd, 2021.

Kwe’! My name is Mercedes Stemm, and I’m a Mi’kmaq woman born and raised in Natoaganeg (Eel Ground) First Nation, New Brunswick. I’m in my last year of my Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Indigenous Studies, and I’ve been in the role of the Indigenous Health in Medicine (IHIM) Program Assistant for a little over a year, as I joined in October of 2019. In my position, I get the chance to be a part of many different projects, events, committees, and initiatives. In addition, I had the wonderful opportunity to create my own program. Read more
