The Avenue Church of England Primary School Application Approved!
Derby Diocesan Academy Trust (DDAT) is delighted to announce that the Department for Education has approved an application to establish a new Church of England primary school at The Avenue development site, near to Wingerworth.
The new school will be developed as part of the Government’s Free School programme. It will create much needed nursery and primary school places for families as the number of residential dwellings on The Avenue site increases alongside other developments in the local area.
The proposed Church of England primary school and nursery will be inclusive and open to pupils from families of all backgrounds and faiths (including no faith) where every child will be welcomed, respected and nurtured. The school will offer a family-friendly approach with breakfast club and after-school provision offering a wide-range of enrichment activities, operating as a community hub and supporting community cohesion.

Fairtrade Fortnight
22 February to 7 March 2021
For two weeks each year at the end of February and start of March, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to share the stories of the people who grow our food and drinks, mine our gold and who grow the cotton used in our clothes, people who are often exploited and underpaid.
In 2021, Fairtrade Fortnight will feel very different, but a range of exciting resources are available including an online festival, ideas for coffee mornings and resources for schools. Visit fairtrade.org for more information.

Announcements from the Bishop of Derby's office
The Revd Samuel Cartwright, Curate of Rochdale 1972-1976 (Manchester), Vicar of Roundthorn St Matthew and St Aidan 1976-1983, Vicar of Ashton-under-Lyne Christ Church1983-1993, who retired in 1993, and had held the Bishop of Derby’s Permission to Officiate in retirement, died on 11th January 2021. Mr Cartwright’s funeral was held on 1st February 2021.
The Revd Dwayne Engh, Vicar of Coventry St Mary Magdalen, Diocese of Coventry, has been appointed Ordained Ministries Development Officer, Diocese of Derby. Mr Engh will start on and be licensed in his new role on Monday 26th April at 9.30 am by the Bishop of Derby.
The Revd Carollyn McDonald, Priest-in-Charge of Fenny Bentley, Thorpe, Tissington, Parwich and Alsop-en-le-Dale, and Acting Diocesan Director of Ordinands, Diocese of Derby, has also been appointed Acting Area Dean of Carsington in the same diocese for a fixed term of up to six months from 14th January 2021. The Revd Canon David Truby, Team Rector of the Wirksworth Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, has also been appointed Assistant Area Dean of Carsington in the same diocese for a fixed term of up to six months from 14th January 2021.
Mrs Christine McMullen, Lay Chair of Peak and Chair of the House of Laity, Diocese of Derby, has also been appointed Acting Warden of Readers in the same diocese for a fixed term of up to three months from 14th December 2020.
The Revd Margaret Slyfield, Assistant Curate (SSM) of the Buxton with Burbage and King Sterndale Team Ministry, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed, for a fixed term of up to three months, part-time Assistant Curate (to be known as Associate Priest) in the Buxton Team Ministry to provide extra ministerial support during the Team Rector’s absence on sick leave. This took effect from 23rd January 2021.

Loved beyond measure, to love without restraint…
Tuesday 16th February, Shrove Tuesday half day of prayer and reflection 9:30-12:30 on Zoom.
The struggles of recent weeks and months have shaken us all. Plans have been put on hold. Nearly everything has changed. We have learned to live from day to day. The crisis threatens everyone, confronting us with our vulnerability and mortality. How do we find our way through, and how are we to be faithful to Christ in these dark days? How are we to know the love of God and share that love with others in this time? At a deep level, can we cope?
Malcolm Macnaughton, Bishop-designate of Repton will be leading our morning of reflection, as together we seek to root the life we share as disciples in the love of God poured out for all in Jesus. The morning will include brief addresses, worship, video interviews, meditation, candles of hope, violin music and optional creative activities, lent poems, individual exercises and group conversation. All are invited, everyone is welcome.

Bishop Libby invites you to join her for worship and reflection in a special Ash Wednesday service, on Facebook, starting at 9am.
The service will be recorded and made available to watch on demand later in the day.

Lent Hope
18th February - 25th March - Zoom
As we continue to experience the restrictions of lockdown and enter Lent, we focus once more on the self-giving love of Christ. During this season, we turn to Christ in penitence and faith, seeking to build our own discipline and spiritual strength to enable us to love without restraint in a way that is life-giving just as Christ loved us.
Between 18th February and 25th March, Bishop Libby and Bishop-designate Malcolm invite you to join them each week for an hour of prayer and reflection together based upon seasonal Bible passages and collects.
Lent Hope is open to all and will be held on Monday morning from 8am - 9am and repeated on Thursday evening from 8pm - 9pm. Do pass this invitation on.

Host a virtual coffee morning with a difference this Lent
This Lent, Send a Cow is asking churches to Love Your Neighbour in support of our refugee work in Uganda. Get social, bring hope and raise funds by holding a virtual coffee morning on Zoom! To make it different from your normal Zoom meetings, invite a Send a Cow speaker to join you - we can tell you about our refugee projects and your guests can ask as many questions they like - all socially distanced!
