City, school offices closed for Presidents Day

Most city offices and schools will be closed Monday, Feb. 15, for Washington's Birthday, or Presidents Day. There will be no regular trash or recycling pickup Monday.  Monday's trash will be picked up on Wednesday, and Wednesday's collection will be made Friday. Go online for the closing list.
 

Council meets today

Budget topics were scheduled to be the focus of City Council’s afternoon work session today. Council was also set to get a report on stormwater projects. These are efforts to reduce the runoff of pollution into the Chesapeake Bay, In the evening business meeting, City Council will:
  • Hear a report from Hampton Roads Transit on bus rapid transit and the transit strategic plan;
  • Hold a public hearing and consider changes to multifamily zoning;
  • Hold a public hearing and consider allowing larger interstate signs for large education or medical campuses.
All meetings are open to the public. Both the 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. meetings were set to be in Council Chambers on the 8th floor of Hampton City Hall at 22 Lincoln St. Those meetings will be televised on the Hampton Channel (Cox Channel 47 and Verizon Fios Channel 22) and streamed at hampton.gov/livetv. Council also met at 9:30 a.m. today, but that meeting was a closed session.
 

Update on state, local covid cases  

Hampton reported 52 new cases of covid today, according to the Virginia Department of Health, bringing the total number of cases to 7,875 since the pandemic began. The city has a positivity rate of 19.6% and a 7-day average of 73 cases daily.

Virginia reported 3,203 new cases today, bringing the total number of cases to 537,319 since the pandemic began. The state has a positivity rate of 10.1% and an average of 3,426 cases daily in the past seven days.

Officials urge residents to continue practicing social distancing, wear masks and wash their hands regularly to avoid spreading covid. You can get more information on cases, the latest testing results, and the covid vaccines by visiting the Virginia Department of Health website.
 

CVS begins vaccine registration

CVS Pharmacy has begun registering Virginians age 65 and older who are within the Phase 1b eligibility guidelines for vaccinations as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. Although the supply of vaccine remains low statewide, eligible individuals can register online. CVS will begin administering vaccinations on Friday, Feb. 12.
 

Televised town hall on covid vaccinations

The Virginia Department of Health will have another televised town hall on the coronavirus tonight from 7-8. Tune in to "Vaccine Town Hall: You Ask. The Experts Answer" as medical experts answer your questions about the covid vaccine. The town hall will be broadcast live on several TV channels, including WAVY10 and FOX43.
