Valentine's Day is Sunday, February 14, 2021
Wayne Local Schools will be closed on Monday, February 15th in observance of Presidents' Day.
VACCINATIONS SET FOR STAFF MEMBERS
We have just confirmed that school staff members will be receiving the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination next Friday, February 19, 2021.
Because of the vaccinations, the physical campus will be closed on Friday, February 19th. However, we are keeping our learning hours going for the day. There will be additional instructions and details emailed and posted next week.
Black History Month, which is celebrated each year during February, is a chance for Americans to learn details of our nation’s history that, unfortunately, are far too often neglected and pushed to the wayside. As the saying goes, black history is American history — and it’s a varied and rich history.
A wise nation honors and learns from its past. It refuses to let the most important facts about our shared and collective memory disappear into the depths of forgotten history. What happened in the past shapes and informs where we are heading in the future, and it’s of paramount importance to set aside a month for learning as much as we can about black history.
8TH GRADE PARENT NIGHT
February 18, 2021
In order to try to reduce the spread of Covid-19, the 8th grade parent night will be a little different this year. Instead of an in-person meeting, a video is being created by Sam Ison, Principal of WHS and his staff with all the information you and your student will need for scheduling, course information, clubs, and other important topics as your child begins the transition to high school.
Free One-on-One Tutoring Available
The Mary L. Cook Library is offering one on one live tutoring to students 7 days a week from 2:00 - 9:00 p.m. You will need your library card to login and create a profile.
Check it out on the Mary L. Cook website at https://www.mlcook.lib.oh.us/ under "Children's Services", then click on "Homework Help for Kids."

SENIOR 2021 GRADUATE SIGNS
With the help of Designs Now and Jamie Gabbard, Comey & Shepherd Reality, every graduating senior will receive their own personalized sign.
The signs will be displayed in the Front of the Middle School in May, then given to the student prior to Graduation.
Seniors Jenna Turner and Brielle Mahoney job shadow at Waynesville Elementary School. Both Jenna and Brielle are interested in education after graduation.
Brielle interned at Cesear's Creek Animal Clinic in the fall and decided to give education a try this Spring. We think she has found her passion, working with kids! Brielle hopes to attend BGSU next fall and major in middle childhood education with an emphasis in math.
Jenna joined our program after winter break. She decided to take her passion of working with kids to the next level. Jenna is deciding between early childhood education and speech pathology. We think both would be a great fit for her. Jenna plans to attend a four-year college or university after graduation. She is still deciding on which. The future is bright for both of these young ladies!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO OUR HIGH SCHOOL FAMILIES:
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS - PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS:
Waynesville High School Families,
The State of Ohio is paying for all 11th grade students to take the ACT. Waynesville High School will be administering this test on Tuesday, March 9th, 2021. In an attempt to provide the best testing environment possible for our students and to meet the processes and protocols set forth by ACT:
- ONLY 11th grade students will be in attendance on March 9th. This includes 11th grade WCCC and VLA students.
- 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students who attend WHS will be remote learning. Their teachers will be giving them assignments/tasks to complete via Google Classroom.
Waynesville Elementary
Screening for Gifted Identification
Grades 2-5
WES does whole grade screening for gifted identification in grades 2-5.
Grades 2 through 5 take the IOWA.
The Iowa Achievement test assists us in determining at what level your child is performing based on national comparisons. As an achievement test, Iowa assesses a student's relative knowledge at the time of assessment and compares that performance against peers across the nation (known as a norming group). Scores for the Iowa are generally noted as Percentile Ranks (NPR) and indicates how your student compared with students in the same grade who took the same assessment at a comparable time.
Grades 2, 3, and 5 also take the CogAT.
Unlike the Iowa assessment, which is achievement based, the CogAT is a school ability test. The Standard Age Score (SAS) is an age-based, normalized standard score with a mean (average) of 100. The student's SAS score is derived from the Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal, and Total scores. Like the Iowa, percentile ranks are also reported to indicate how your child performed in relation to grade-level and like-age peers who were assessed on the same measure at a comparable time.
IN PERSON LEARNERS
The following testing schedule will be used for IOWA/CogAT testing for our in person learners. Please try to avoid scheduling appointments on testing days.
Grade 2: Monday and Tuesday, February 8-9
Grade 3: Monday and Tuesday, February 22-23
Grade 4: Thursday and Friday, February 25-26
Grade 5: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, February 16-18
VLA LEARNERS
The following testing schedule will be used for IOWA/CogAT testing for our VLA learners.
Grade 2: Friday, February 12 8:30-4:00
Grade 3: Wednesday, February 24, 8:30-4:00
Grade 4: Thursday, February 11, 8:30-4:00
Grade 5: Friday, February 19, 8:30-4:00
