"Women in Blue" Documentary Premieres
Associate Professor Deirdre Fishel, head of the undergraduate Film and Video program within CCNY's Division of Humanities and the Arts, is the director of Women in Blue, which premiered this week on PBS Independent Lens and streams through Feb. 28. "When I went to the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) in 2017, to begin a documentary about what women—who use far less excessive force than their male counterparts—could bring to help stem police violence, I could never have imagined that George Floyd would be brutally murdered by a white, male MPD officer in 2020," says Fishel. "'Women in Blue' clearly reveals the limitations of police reform through incremental change. It also showcases a group of women battling to reform that department from the inside and [asks] what could gender equity and more women—especially Black women—bring to the table as we reimagine public safety?"
CCNY Athletes Bring Virtual Workouts to Kids' Club
Community service remains an integral part of CCNY Athletics, with scholar-athletes committed to giving back, even within the pandemic's health and safety constraints. The City College men's basketball team recently conducted a basketball and fitness workout virtually with children at the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club, Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse, in the Bronx. CCNY women's basketball player and Boys & Girls Club staffer Nahomi Zambrano coordinated the project.
I Am CCNY: Yaritza Morales, Class of 2021 Major: Geology, within the Division of Science's Earth and Atmospheric Sciences department, because I was interested in what I could do to make a change in the world after constantly hearing about the climate change crisis. In New York City there is not much wildlife, but I believe that being in such an environmentally progressive city was a big factor in my choosing to study Geology. CCNY Highlights: I participate in research withAssociate Professor Karin Block. Due to this, I have been able to participate in a mentor/researcher internship for the past two summers with the Hudson River Park Trust. As the Manhattan chapter of the greater NSF INCLUDES program, we focus on fostering a deeper scientific interest in young girls who come from communities that are historically underrepresented in the sciences.
