Pause. Refect. Act.

Three simple words with a whole lot of power to make your wellness days - and time at UNC - more beneficial for you.

Pause. Take a moment. This could mean as small as stopping in the midst of something evoking strong feelings or as big as initiating a meditation practice. It could mean just taking a few deep breaths.

Pausing for a moment - or several - to separate ourselves a bit from what’s happening allows for us to regain sight of what’s important.

Reflect. This is the MOST IMPORTANT step to any growth or learning. You can read all the books, watch all the films, listen to all the podcasts, but without taking time to consider what you’ve learned afterwards, most lessons will be lost.

Reflect means to think deeply and carefully. Give yourself time to consider what you need and how you add value to your community. What motivates you? What brings you joy? How can you make space in your life for what’s important? What can you do to better meet your needs? How can you make space to have a positive impact on your community?

Act. Based on your reflection, take the first step to get what you need. Reach out to ask for help if you need it!

Your questions: Answered

I feel down because of all the things we’re missing due to COVID restrictions. Any advice?

You are not alone. We’re almost a year into the changes due to COVID, and things certainly aren’t getting any easier. Our expectations for this time likely don’t match the reality.

Go easy on yourself (and each other!). None of us signed up for this experience.

Feel it. All feelings ebb and flow, so there may be times when everything feels under control and times when the smallest task feels impossible. Wherever you are, give yourself permission to sit with your feelings for a bit.

Do the next small thing. When you feel ready, do something small. Get out of bed, take a shower, eat something nourishing, go outside. Taking the first step is always the most difficult part.

Stay connected. You might feel exhausted, ashamed, or guilty - you still need connection. Reaching out is a sign of strength. Connect with people who make you feel safe and cared for.

Do what makes you feel good. Remember the things that brought you joy in the past and find a way to incorporate some part of them now.

Support your health. Pick whatever feels doable and start there: Get enough sleep. Move your body. Practice mindful eating. Practice relaxation strategies. Spend time in nature. Write in a journal. Listen to music. Play with a pet. Check some easy things off your to-do list.

You can get through this. You’ve survived 100% of the hard things life has put in front of you.

When you’ve taken self-help steps and things still feel hard, seek professional help. Asking for help is a sign of strength! CAPS is available 24/7 at 919-966-3658.
