Meet Our Environmental Leaders

Bethesda Green’s Environmental Leaders Program (ELP) is an experiential school-year long sustainability program targeting high school students in their senior year currently offered for Montgomery County high schools. The training focuses on environmental stewardship and community engagement with local organizations and businesses. Meet our 2020-2021 Environmental Leaders.

Did You Catch the ELP Presentation on Microplastics in Our Environment?

The ELPs spent last fall participating in The Clean Headwaters program focused on plastics waste in our waters. They researched the impact of microplastics on local ecosystems and learned about various solutions - from policy to scientific innovation. Click the video above to watch their presentation and learn about things we can do to better manage & reduce plastic waste.

Introducing the ELP Spring Projects

Students complete a spring semester project on a sustainability topic of their choosing with guidance from Bethesda Green staff. By initiating a project from concept phase through to completion, students gain valuable skills and connections. Read about their projects below!
Emily Wu: I am working to build a pollinator garden on a cul de sac in my neighborhood. The garden will both provide habitat and food to pollinating species, such as honeybees and butterflies. In addition, it will also provide decoration and beautification for the scenery.
Sander Shulman: I’ll explore the impact of the invasive Northern Snakehead on native species and ecosystems in Maryland. I’ll be explaining what invasive species are and will look into the scope of snakehead invasion in Montgomery county. I will also be researching the impact of climate change on the snakehead. I'll present this information by designing a website with interactive maps and games.
Amalia Villegas Vega: I will create a coloring book of endangered species of the Chesapeake Bay. The book will include 12 pages of animals with information about why they are endangered and an introduction to the Chesapeake Bay. When the book is completed, I will share it with local elementary school teachers digitally and hardcopy.
Meera Shroff: I will create a 6-episode podcast series about single-use plastics covering their production, how they act in the environment, how recycling plays a part, and alternatives. The podcast is meant to be accessible to teenagers and young adults, simplifying complex studies and information from experts without losing their content. The podcast will be promoted through social media and will be available on Bethesda Green’s website.
Paula Gonalez Alvarez: My project will serve to educate high schoolers and college students, as well as any other person interested, about anaerobic digestion. The project will consist of a website about anaerobic digestion that will include how it works, its benefits and disadvantages, and information about anaerobic digestors in Montgomery County as well as world leaders in anaerobic digestion. I am also working to include a video of a visit to an anaerobic digester and some interactive games that will provide the students with a more graphic understanding of the subject.
Anthony Lombardo: I will be educating on how to help prevent the further spread of invasive Northern Snakehead in the area and common ways in which invasive species are introduced. This will be presented through a website that includes all information regarding the northern snakehead species, and a general overview of how they were introduced. The website will include a series of interactive maps and interviews about this species.
