This week's 'Thought for St James'

My favourite sermon was delivered by a very elderly priest in a small village church in Gozo, Malta. I did not understand a single word of Maltese but was deeply affected by the gentle, pleading, aching love towards his congregation evident in every fibre of this aged priest’s body.

Having my voice badly affected by Long Covid, I have wondered if I may ever deliver a sermon again. This priest’s example comforts and inspires me. It was not what he said but his attitude that was the Gospel message - and that I can exercise.

We might feel like voices in the wilderness just now yet we can still embody the gospel good news by our attitude in these testing times. Isn’t that, after all, what Jesus - the Word become flesh - did?

Paul wrote to a squabbling Church in Philippi;

 ‘Let your gentleness be evident to all, the Lord is near.‘
                                                                             (Philippians 4:5)

We are all experiencing some form of loss just now so I recommend reading the rest of Chapter 4 as there you will find the perfect recipe for comfort and peace.
