This week I watched Framing Britney Spears. A New York Times documentary about Britney Spears' conservatorship and the #FreeBritney movement.
While I have never been deeply invested in the details of Britney Spears' career and life, I am old enough to remember the tabloid fodder in real-time. The documentary attempts to contextualize this period, by noting that Briney's rise was against the backdrop of the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, and a period of heightened villainization of women in the spotlight.
While the documentary falls short, I think, at truly addressing how horrendously the media in the 2000s treated women and how it gave men endless leeway to craft the narrative in their favour; I am still glad that we are revisiting this 2021. Let's do the accountability of Justin Timberlake next.
