This week I watched Framing Britney Spears. A New York Times documentary about Britney Spears' conservatorship and the #FreeBritney movement.

While I have never been deeply invested in the details of Britney Spears' career and life, I am old enough to remember the tabloid fodder in real-time. The documentary attempts to contextualize this period, by noting that Briney's rise was against the backdrop of the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, and a period of heightened villainization of women in the spotlight.

While the documentary falls short, I think, at truly addressing how horrendously the media in the 2000s treated women and how it gave men endless leeway to craft the narrative in their favour; I am still glad that we are revisiting this 2021. Let's do the accountability of Justin Timberlake next.

I'm reading

The numbers don’t tell the whole story: Unemployment statistics can’t capture the full extent of what women have lost. In Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, these survivors found a voice: ‘I felt with her the deeply vulnerable pain of telling someone'. The Future is The Supremes: On The Supremes, afrofuturism, and processing grief. ‘Fuck Your Feelings’ never applies to white men: The logic of abuse has ordered our lives for so long, it must not be allowed to rule our politics any longer. Justin Timberlake made a career at the expense of women. And it's not just you: a lot of us are hitting a pandemic wall right now

I'm watching

Host is a short (it's 57 min!) feature film about six friends who accidentally invite the attention of a demonic presence during Zoom séance. Truly terrifying with jump scares to rival some of the best in the horror genre; Host takes the constraints of the medium, here it's an entire movie by Zoom call, and crafts something truly engaging and surprisingly insightful.

And the constraints of the pandemic has given us some great online couture shows. Here are a few of my faves: Louis Vuitton Men's Fall/Winter 2021 Fashion Show. Dior Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2021 Collection and Chanel Spring-Summer 2021 Haute Couture Show.
