Tasting Notes:
Écarté is a classical ballet term meaning ‘separated, thrown apart, or a change of direction.’ Our first Écarté was made in 2013 when we separated and changed the direction of our Élevé Pinot noir, a blend of the Pommard and Dijon 777 clones, a classic pairing. In that year and following, we began bottling Pommard exclusively, now known as the Écarté, and in 2016, we were rewarded with Double Golds and Platinum Medals along with 95 points and Best Pinot noir overall at the San Francisco International Wine Competition! We have also renamed the Élevé. It is now known as the Alto, signifying its location as the highest elevation block on the estate.
From the Winemaking Team: This 100% Pommard blend opens with aromatics of blueberry tart, warm soil, and an underlying layer of graphite. The blueberry line carries into the palate but shifts to bright cherry as the acid becomes more prevalent and the texture becomes more apparent. A moderate amount of new French oak provides additional weight and body to the fruit along with a subtle chocolate character on the finish. This is a very enjoyable wine today, but for those who can resist the temptation, they will be rewarded greatly in the future as the 2018 Écarté has great aging potential.
Technical Data:
The fruit for the 2018 “Écarté” was sourced from one of our newest blocks (20) and is a single clone expression of the Pommard clone. The fruit was harvested on September 7th with an average chemistry of 22.6 Brix and 3.85 pH.
The fruit was hand-sorted 2 separate times on the morning of harvest; once in the field while picking, and once on an inclined sorting table feeding the de-stemmer. The fruit was then allowed to cold soak for up to five days. The fermenting must was then punched down daily during peak fermentation. The fermented wine was then drained directly to barrel, and pressed. Following Malolactic fermentation, the wines were aged on lees until the following spring, when they were racked off lees and blended. The wine was bottled August 14th, 2019.
