A Lesson from St. Patrick
Who was St. Patrick?
St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the only saint who has an entire river turn green in Chicago on his feast day (March 17th).
Patrick was born in the 5th century in Britain. At an early age, probably when he was only 16, he was kidnapped and taken to be a slave in Ireland. For six years he was a shepherd, until he finally escaped and went back to Britain and became a priest.
But he could not forget what he saw in Ireland and he did go back there to evangelize the Irish. Legend has it that he taught the Trinity using a shamrock with the three leaves. Another popular story is that Patrick threw all the snakes out of Ireland; (actually there never were many snakes but they became a symbol for the pagan beliefs he threw out of the land).
Patrick wrote about his life in a book he called his confessions. He starts his story by calling himself “Patrick, a sinner.” He wrote that when he was a slave he found God through prayer. “There in my captivity the Lord opened my mind to an awareness of my unbelief, in order that I might remember my sins and turn with all my heart to the Lord my God” The lesson of the young St. Patrick is that we can all make the journey from faith that we have ignored, to a renewed friendship with God.
