Watch: Digital Outreach is Essential for Modern Campaigns

Campaigns

Donald Trump's Business Sought A Stake In Parler Before He Would Join
BuzzfeedNews.com
"The Trump Organization negotiated on behalf of then-president Donald Trump to make Parler his primary social network, but it had a condition: an ownership stake in return for joining, according to documents and four people familiar with the conversations. The deal was never finalized, but legal experts said the discussions alone, which occurred while Trump was still in office, raise legal concerns with regards to anti-bribery laws."

Data

Mike Bloomberg’s data firm Hawkfish is closing shop
POLITICO.com
"After he dropped out, Bloomberg invested another $20 million into the company, as it pitched its work to Joe Biden’s campaign. But the Biden campaign declined to use Hawkfish, in part because of fierce pushback from progressives and campaign advisers who did not want to outsource the work."

Fundraising

What Worked in 2020 Political Campaign SMS Fundraising
Tatango.com
"From our research, 37 percent of respondents said they felt influenced to register to vote because of political text messages. In fact, 6 out of 10 messages were get-out-the-vote related. This means SMS marketing definitely has an impact on getting voters to the polls—potentially in very key constituencies or swing states."

Campaigns return to old trick after Facebook cuts off fundraising
POLITICO.com
"The resurgence of email list acquisition raises several concerns for political campaigns, strategists acknowledged. Since the practice relies on using preexisting donor lists others have already built, the same pool of small-dollar donors ends up getting a growing number of emails from different campaigns, raising the risk of donor fatigue."

Social Media

Sheryl Sandberg Downplayed Facebook's Role In The Capitol Hill Siege-Justice Department Files Tell A Very Different Story
Forbes.com
"In total, the charging documents refer to 223 individuals in the Capitol Hill riot investigation. Of those documents, 73 reference Facebook. That’s far more references than other social networks. YouTube was the second most-referenced on 24. Instagram, a Facebook-owned company, was next on 20. Parler, the app that pledged protection for free speech rights and garnered a large far-right userbase, was mentioned in just eight."

Facebook Dials Down the Politics for Users
NYTimes.com
"The social network announced on Wednesday that it had started changing its algorithm to reduce the political content in users’ news feeds. The less political feed will be tested on a fraction of Facebook’s users in Canada, Brazil and Indonesia beginning this week, and will be expanded to the United States in the coming weeks, the company said."

Twitter to uphold permanent ban against Trump, even if he were to run for office again
NBCNews.com
"'When you’re removed from the platform, you’re removed from the platform,' Twitter CFO Ned Segal told CNBC in an interview on Wednesday morning."

Technology

Apply Now to Join Startup Caucus’ 2021 Incubator
"The Startup Caucus incubator helps entrepreneurs and companies at every stage enter into the political marketplace through our network of mentors, regular content and programming, and a community of fellow entrepreneurs. We also provide support through business development, marketing, and sales."

Tech Helps Opinion Researchers Work During The Pandemic At A Cost
CampaignsandElections.com
"Opinion researchers have leaned into technology to help gather data during the pandemic. In some cases, they may have found ways to help improve accuracy in polling, but for others the experience has created an added burden."

Opinion | They Stormed the Capitol. Their Apps Tracked Them.
NYTimes.com
"It became clear that this data — collected by smartphone apps and then fed into a dizzyingly complex digital advertising ecosystem — was a liability to national security, to free assembly and to citizens living mundane lives. It provided an intimate record of people whether they were visiting drug treatment centers, strip clubs, casinos, abortion clinics or places of worship."

One-third of Americans say their 2020 voting decision was impacted by campaign text messages
PRNewswire.com
"The Mitto survey, which polled 1,000 Americans on November 4, 2020, also found that campaign text messages influenced 31% of respondents to vote for a general election candidate/party and 26% to donate to the candidate/party that sent the text message."
