TCS Times

Nau mai, haere mai ngā whānau o te kura o Tahatai.  A very warm welcome to all our TCS students and their families.

The safety of our students is our number one priority and this needs to be something we achieve in partnership between home and school. It is incredibly important we do everything we can to protect our students as they arrive and depart school each day. Things such as modelling the use of the school road patrol crossings, not parking along areas marked with yellow lines, and adhering to the speed limit are critical to this. It is incredibly disappointing to see parents cross the road opposite Grenada Street. When our junior students see this, they also think it is okay to cross here, which is our most dangerous section of road outside the school.

It has been fantastic to see how much the community is enjoying the new playground and basketball court. A reminder that we see these resources as ones that work within our school values, so when used outside of school hours they feel safe and inviting for all ages. We also need to be mindful of our awesome neighbours who have struggled with excessive noise levels, often late into the evening. New signage will be displayed next week supporting this message.

This year, we are beginning each day with a karakia. Karakia can take many forms, but at Tahatai our school karakia acknowledges the beautiful place in which we live and learn. It is a karakia written especially for Tahatai Coast School. There is no religious context reflected in our school karakia. The purpose of using our karakia is to set the tone and acknowledge the transition into school for another day of exciting learning. I have shared it below for you to see the translation:
It was great meeting the PTA committee for 2021 on Wednesday night. A big thank you to Stacey Smith for doing such a wonderful job as PTA Chairperson for the past two years. Congratulations to both Louisa-Jane Rawlings and Stephanie Bond who have been elected as co-chairs. The PTA are a vital component of our school and school community. Their fundraising efforts make a huge and very positive impact on our children. They have lots planned for this year and in advance, I appreciate all the support you will give them. The PTA is always looking for more volunteers so if you are interested in joining, please email pta@tahatai.school.nz to find out more.

Please Note: Upcoming Teacher Only Day
We will be having a Teacher Only Day on Friday, 16th April (Last day of Term 1).  This date has been chosen to minimise the effect on families.  During this day, our staff will be working with other professionals from the Mount Community of Learning, which includes Arataki School, Mount Maunganui Intermediate, Mount Primary, Omanu School and Mount Maunganui College.  Thanks in advance for your understanding.

TECT Community Awards - Please Vote!
PiPS, the organisation behind our lovely Tahatai garden club, has been selected as a finalist in the category ’Sustainable Future’ in the TECT Community Awards which Whaea Clare and her team are very honoured about. This nomination has come about because of the hard work and amazing contribution the tamariki, teachers and volunteers have put into the club.

TECT is holding a people's choice award and PiPS would like you to take the time to vote for them.  The voting takes less than 20-30 seconds to complete.

Please click on the link below to vote.  Voting closes on Friday, 5th March.

Have a beautiful day everyone.

Ngā mihi nui, the PiPs team.

Science Dune Planters
What a great first day our Kaitiaki (guardians) had down at the dunes last Friday. This eager bunch of scientists are a group of Kaitiaki that care for and look after our dunes at the end of Evans Road. Over the year they will help to monitor the health of our dunes and be real scientists.

Thank you to Emma Richardson from “Discovery through nature” for making this happen.
Urgent message
re:New Entrant Enrolments

Do you have a child turning 5 this year?

We urgently need an indication of how many 5 year olds we will be expecting during 2021. If you have a child due to start school, please come and see us to complete the enrolment paperwork.

This helps us to plan a smooth transition into school for your child; helps us to plan staffing for the New Entrant classes; and ensures that you are invited to the relevant parent information meetings. Thank you.
A Letter of Thanks
Reminder: Use of Bike Bay
To help with the flow of the children through the bike bay, we would appreciate if parents/caregivers and other whānau members do not cut through or access the area.  We would like to keep this area clear for children to enter easily in the morning and exit in the afternoon.  This is simply a congestion issue.
