President's Message

Dear <<First Name>>

It’s been a great start to the season for West Pymble Football Club teams with some fabulous performances and results right across the board. Our flagship Premier League teams are proudly representing out club.

The Men's Premier League squad, under the astute guidance of coaches Greg Fuchs, Jono Tatt and Nick Hugh, are 5 wins from 5 matches in both grades - a fabulous start and we wish them well against Lindfield this Saturday night at Charles Bean Sportsground. I am sure that the squad would appreciate your support if you can make it.

After a tough draw in the opening rounds, our Women's Premier League team coached by Jim Harte and Max Moore have found some form with a win over Northbridge B and a pulsating last gasp equaliser for a 2-2 draw on Tuesday night against the highly fancied North Sydney team at Cammeray Oval. We wish the ladies all the best to continue to improve over the course of the season and and in their State Cup fixture this Sunday against Concord Junior SC.

A reminder that for Miniroos teams that the first re-grade of teams will be undertaken by the NSFA after this weekend's Round 5 games. This regrade should address teams on either end of lop-sided results.

We encourage all other teams to send through highlights from their teams with a video or photo that we can share with our members on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WestPymbleFC/.

To request a post for your team, please email our Communications team at comms@wpfc.com.au and we ask that Team Managers please take the lead on this. We encourage all of our members to 'Like' and follow the page to keep up to date with club events, announcements and achievements.

We had a huge Female Football Week last week (see first article). Well done to everyone who participated and a shout out to Abby Denham-McQuillen, Lorin Lambert and all others who were involved in organising a fantastic week of activities celebrating girls and women's football at our club. Female football is certainly thriving and growing at West Pymble FC!

The Norman Griffiths Oval synthetic pitch project is proceeding and is now out to tender. Our understanding is that the original timeline remains to have the field completed by the start of April 2022 for the start of our 2022 season. Thank you to everyone who has written to Councillors in recent weeks to communicate your support for the project - I can assure that it all helps to ensure that our Councillors continue to prioritise and deliver what will be an amazing facility that will benefit our club and the broader community.

Lastly a huge shout out to our volunteer coaches, managers, coordinators and other volunteers for your time and effort in getting the season under way and enabling our members to enjoy their football.

It would be remiss of me not to mention our fabulous sponsors listed at the bottom of the newsletter and a special welcome to new sponsors Splash Pool Cleaning, Brick Lane Espresso, Richard Bonouvrie McGrath Real Estate, Kinetic Sports Chiropractic, and Lindfield Hip & Knee Clinic. We encourage all of our members to reciprocate the generous support of our sponsors by supporting our sponsors businesses.

All the best to all players, coaches and managers for your matches this weekend.

Here are some updates and events happening around the club:
Regards,
Kevin Johnson
President WPFC

Female Football Week

Female Football Week (1 thru 9 May) was a successful, well attended and fun week. It is one of our favourite events of the year, and is certainly one of the best. The purpose is to celebrate the immense growth of women’s football at all levels of the game and acknowledge and promote the important role women play in developing football.

West Pymble FC hosted several activities which focus on community, fun, skill and overall team spirit. These events were organised by the clubs marvellous Female Football Working Group, made up by Lorin Lambert, Abby Denham-Mcquillen, Karina Young, Georgia Campbell, Catherine Weinress, Georgie Sefton, and Mar Tristán Vega.

The activities and events included - as featured Facebook page, and website - were:

  • 1 May - Soccer Zumba at Norman Griffiths Oval
  • 2 May - Girls Movie Night at the West Pymble Bicentennial Club
  • 5 May - Female Coach Workshop with Lorin Lambert (via Zoom)
  • 6 May - Coaches of Female Game Workshop (at NTRA)
  • 9 May - WO35 teams Gala Day & Picnic (Norman Griffiths Oval)
  • 9 May - WPFC Mother's Day dinner at the West Pymble Bicentennial Club

Team Profile - Women's Over 35s

Our club has been the home to Women's Over 35 team/s in excess of 15 years. Such is the popularity and renown of this magnificent squad and group of women, that it has grown by 10 new players this season expand the squad to 55 players - some that have played in this age group for over 15 years!

2021 sees three teams fielded: the Minions (Division 1); the Amigas (Division 3); and the Sapphires (Division 3).

This squad has come together for the main purpose of gaining friendships and having fun, football and fitness is a good bonus! Like all great teams, they have their secret weapon...playing for each other in the spirit of learning whilst laughing.

The teams play all-year round. In the regular (Winter) season, they play in the NSFA 11-a-side competition. In the off-season, many of the ladies keep up their fitness, football skills and friendships by playing 5 or 6-a-side football. They participate in local competitions as well as some NSW and interstate tournaments for a good trip away with the girls!

In the 2021 competition the teams are enjoying working on acquiring new skills, holding positions and are demonstrating great moments of passing football. Their highlights are seen and (importantly) acknowledged on the pitch, where each player applauds and cheers on the efforts of their team mates. They love seeing their friends progressing within their own abilities.

Then there are the shout outs...to the 'super coaches' Ian Plant, and Emma Fitzgerald who give their wisdom and time each week; and to the team Managers Sally Sindler, Sarah Plant, Danica Leys, and Abby Denham-McQuillen, who are instrumental in getting everyone to show up at the right ground, right pitch, and the right time each week.

This season the Minions have come up with a Players' Player award for each week - check out the photos of Angela and Cara, below. The Amigas, for a few seasons now, have had the 'Poncho of Pride' for their Player of The Match, and the Sapphires have a tiara which they award to their 'Princess on the Pitch' each week.”

Do yourselves a favour: Come on down to one of their games; cheer on this mighty team of women, and get in there with sharing in the spirit of what it means to be a WO35 Pymble Player!

Player Profile - Lorin Lambert

When did you start playing football and what interests you about the game?
I started playing football at the age of 9 and I was invested in it straight away. The freedom you have on the pitch and the mental drive you need to really push yourself gave me such a challenge and still does to this day. I also have made so many great friends through football, it really is a sport that brings people together.

When did you start playing for WPFC?
I first started playing for WPFC when I was 9. I played for a few years before I moved countries and had the chance to play in Guam and New Zealand, until I came back to WPFC in 2016.

What has been your team progression in your time with the club?
When I moved back to WPFC in 2016 we only had a WAA team in division 2 and 4. Over two years we were able to progress the team and pull in players to push ourselves into the Premier League where we are now, with WAA growing to three teams in total.

What other roles have you / do you take on at the club when not playing?
This year will be my 5th year coaching at WPFC, and my 3rd year coaching a Diamond League team. I am heavily involved with the female side of the club including female development, both players and coaches. I am the Female Technical Director, the Female Football Working Group Representative, and run a Female Coach Mentor Program, so I definitely have my hands full when I'm not playing.

Clearly football is the sport you love; what other sports did you play when you were younger and did you excel at any?
When I was younger I was involved in lots of sports which included elite gymnastics, dancing, swimming, and athletics. Even to this day, I like to keep busy with a lot of sport which includes AFL and Oztag.

Favourite Football Player
Ellie Carpenter would have to be one of my top favourite football players. She is driven and has worked so hard to get where she is today. Her determination, skill and fitness make her such a great role model for so many young girls.

What do you enjoy doing away from football?
I am very passionate about the environment and sustainability, which is where I spend most of my time with my career. Whenever I am not playing/coaching soccer, playing other sports or working, you will likely find me organising beach clean-ups, going to the beach, or going for bushwalks.

What are three things you cannot live without?
1. Rice - an absolute staple in my diet.
2. My glasses or contacts, as I wouldn't be able to see much without them.
3. Sport (obviously).https://nsfa.asn.au/female-football/nsfa-womens-select-secure-shootout-win/

Synthetic Pitch Update

Shout Outs!

WPFC Female Football Working Group: comprised of Lorin Lambert, Abby Denham-Mcquillen, Karina Young, Georgia Campbell, Catherine Weinress, Georgie Sefton, and Mar Tristán Vega, for their magnificent and hard work in putting together the club's activities and events for this year's successful Female Football Week.

G11 Sapphires: In the true spirit and joy of this great game, this is a joint venture team between WPFC and Gordon Soccer Club. Both clubs didn't have enough players to form a G11 team, so teamed up to ensure they could all have fun while playing football, and without doubt have made new friends. Brava!

Lauren Bannerman and Kathy Zvirblis: The manager (WPFC) and coach (Gordon SC) of the G11 Sapphires. In yet another show for the wonderful spirit of football of different clubs working together for a greater goal (yes, pun intended).

Ella Griffin, Lily Boyse, Emily Oppenheim (G18A), Sarah Oppenheim (G16A): Junior players within their respective age group A-Teams, have taken on the extra challenge among their already busy school and football schedules, to coach Miniroos teams this year. Ella leading the U8 Vipers, with Lily, Emily, and Sarah splitting their schedules to lead the U6 Possums.

Men's Premier League team: Five rounds in, five wins. A great start to the season scoring 17 goals and conceding 4. These wins come in spite of a number of players unable to play due to injuries, who have turned up each week to support the squad.

Men's Reserve Grade team: Mirroring their Premier League brothers with a fantastic 5 wins and zero losses to start this season, picking up 13 goals and conceding 4.

Club Trivia

Being the first club in the Ku-Ring-Gai district back in February 1957, West Pymble, have a long and storied history. One of the great parts of having such a great and proud history, is that we keep on creating new milestones for the club.

2021 sees the foundation of our first ever Girls Under 6 team - The G6 Maisie's - for our club. This is made up of an incredible 18 players.

For a trailblazing team, there is no greater tribute than to their namesake, Maisie Alexander, who was a trailblazer for women's football in Sydney. She was the first president of the Sydney Ladies Soccer Association, when it was formed nearly a century ago, on 30 June 1921.

Here's to this being the start of a long history of G6 teams for the club and to our current Maisie's becoming long term WPFC players that love and excel in this great game.
