Virtual PhD Summer School:
'Researching post-Brexit and (post-Covid) EU-UK relations: What impact on Policies, Methods and Theories?'
5-9 July 2021
The NEXTEUK Virtual PhD Summer School, organised in partnership with the Jean Monnet Centre of Montreal, is planned from July 5th to 9th.
It offers an intensive, multidisciplinary (political science, international relations, law, business and management etc.) and participatory programme at an advanced academic level, in which PhD students and early career researchers interested in the Brexit process and the EU-UK relationship will be provided a stimulating environment for intellectual exchange and academic training.
Interested PhD students and early career researchers can apply until 5 April.

Journal of European Integration (JEI) Special Issue: 'Pandemic Politics and European Union responses'
Sarah Wolff, main investigator of the NEXTEUK project, and Stella Ladi, member of the NEXTEUK steering committee, have coordinated a Journal of European Integration Special Issue on 'Pandemic Politics and European Union responses.'
The special issue explores some of the key challenges that the EU has faced in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The JEI special issue comes at a time when the response to the COVID-19 pandemic has become increasingly challenging for the EU, and for its Member States. The special issue features timely contributions from leading scholars in the field of European politics and EU health policy. The contributions to the JEI special issue on Pandemic Politics and European responses examine the implications of the EU’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic for EU economic governance, free movement in Europe, EU cybersecurity policy, and EU climate policy development.

(Virtual) Coffee and Politics: Brexit and the State of British Democracy
On 2 February, the NEXTEUK project organised its first (Virtual) Coffee and Politics on 'Brexit and the State of British Democracy.' This original format offered QMUL students a unique opportunity to engage and discuss with leading experts.
Attendees had the opportunity to listen and engage with Professor Kalypso Nicolaïdis (Oxford University) and Dr Robert Saunders (QMUL) on the current state of British democracy. |

EU and UK health and vaccination strategies in times of Covid-19: (mis)trust and politics
On 1 March, the NEXTEUK project held a webinar on 'EU and UK health and vaccination strategies in times of Covid-19: (mis)trust and politics.'
Covid-19 is the first major test for EU-UK relations. The vaccination race and ensuing competition for contracts and jabs had led to a first major row between the UK and its ex-EU partners. Following the announcement of the delivery of less vaccines by AstraZeneca, the Commission made the mistake to announce a control of EU exports of vaccines therefore suspending de facto the Northern Ireland protocol. Correcting immediately its mistake, after raising the eyebrows of Germany and France, this diplomatic row highlights the role that the health and vaccination strategies can have on the future of the EU-UK relations. The panellists included:

Members of the NEXTEUK Team have recently published new articles and blog posts. They have also made contributions to the media.
Violeta Moreno-Lax has started a Fernand Braudel Senior Research Fellowship at the EUI (January to July 2021) to research the matter of "humanitarian smuggling" and the criminalisation of NGOs engaged in search and rescue operations of seaborne refugees in the Mediterranean.
As part of the MAPS Jean Monnet Network (2018-21) that she co-leads, she has convened a conference with Dr Niovi Vavoula on " Conflicting Responses to Refugees and Migrants in Covid-19 Europe" on 11 December 2020, attracting over 200 participants.
She has been commissioned by the European Parliament to lead a study on "The EU Approach on Migration in the Mediterranean", leading a multi-disciplinary, international team of experts to deliver recommendations to the LIBE Committee in preparation for the negotiations of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum package.
Her latest op-ed "A New Common European Approach to Search and Rescue? Entrenching Proactive Containment" has been published in the EU Migration Law Blog of the ODYSSEUS academic network on 3 February.
