PPE  Claim Deadline TODAY (12th Feb)

Today is the deadline for Community pharmacy contractors to claim reimbursement for their expenditure on personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Claims must be submitted using the Manage Your Service (MYS) portal by 12th February 2021

If you haven't made your yet claim please do so - otherwise you will miss out!

Serious Shortage Protocols

Serious Shortage Protocols are issued by the government and allow pharmacists to provide patients with an alternative product or quantity to their original prescribed treatment without the need to refer back to the prescriber. You can find more information on these using the link below:

Where these are in place for specified medicines, patients should not be referred back to their GP practice unless the alternatives are not acceptable to the patient. Information on the current SSPs can be found at:

Please check these links before referring patients back to their GP for the prescribing of alternatives to ensure that an SSP is not in place.

Use of PPE and Lateral Flow Tests

PPE

The use of personal protective equipment in day-to-day pharmacy practice has become routine and safe and effective donning and doffing of PPE is a standard practice now in community pharmacy settings.

However, the regional NHSE&I team have identified circumstances where lapses or breaks in the use of PPE may have contributed to outbreaks with significant consequences in pharmacies in the Midlands.

Please review the use of PPE with your teams to ensure that this is being used appropriately at all times, including:
  • During tea and lunch breaks where facilities are being shared and screens or social distancing is not possible
  • Traveling to work, where use of public transport or sharing of cars is unavoidable
Remember, COVID-19 doesn't recognise working hours!

Lateral Flow Tests for Pharmacy Staff

Following the opportunity earlier this year, many pharmacies now have lateral flow tests for their teams to use to monitor and identify any potential cases.

If your pharmacy has these, please ensure that they are used appropriately and that the results of each individuals' tests are reported on the appropriate system. Tests should be performed twice weekly.

We are working with the NHSE&I team to determine if additional supplies of lateral flow tests will be available (for example to capture new colleagues). Please let us know if your team require additional tests so that we can identify potential need.

If your pharmacy has any spare tests, for example if a staff member has left, or has been confirmed with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis (as testing would then be suspended for 90 days), please get in touch too.
