Designing and Facilitating Critically Reflective Dialogue

This two-part facilitation workshop focuses on designing for and facilitating critically reflective dialogue, using UVA Acts' 3x3 Series as a model experience. The 3x3 Series was created to disrupt monolithic understandings of communities at UVA and provide online opportunities for learning among instructors. Each short video is accompanied by 3 questions for reflection, 3 resources for further learning, and 3 ways to take action. We encourage you to participate in both sessions if possible.

Public Service Week Events
We are cosponsoring two events during Public Service Week with the Office for Academic Outreach and Equity Center. Dr. Randy Stoecker, from the University of Wisconsin, will be joining us virtually for a talk, followed by a small, interactive workshop.

From the Margins to the Streets: Higher Ed Community Engagement for Justice
In this talk, Dr. Stoecker will argue that we need to find "free spaces" in the margins of higher education institutions—those few places where academic freedom still thrives—from which to practice community engagement in hopes of supporting progressive social change. From such marginalized spaces, we can better support community-led social change as allies, bringing our work onto the streets rather than coopting the community's work into the institution.

Implementing Liberating Service Learning
Liberating service learning is a practice that stands the institutionalized service learning model on its head. In this interactive workshop, Dr. Stoecker will begin with a brief presentation on how to put social change first, supported by community organizing, research forms of service, and collective learning. Participants will then discuss the implications of this model for their own work.

In the 2021-2022 LTi cycle, the team is particularly interested in faculty proposals that engage and address the teaching and learning challenges of the post-pandemic return to Grounds.
