ELA Dept Votes to Retain College in the High School and AP Courses
On February 10, the ELA department voted to continue to offer and require a “college” year made up of College in the High School, English 101, and/or Advanced Placement courses. Family surveys favored this decision, with 75% unreservedly supporting RHS continuing to require a year of such courses, and with 81% of a subgroup of families of students of color supporting the decision. The ELA department would like to thank the community for their input and ongoing support.
Did you know that Roosevelt offers Latin? Latin 1 is open to all students, including rising juniors and seniors. Consider taking Latin as your first or your second World language, or simply as an interdisciplinary humanities elective. The Latin community is inclusive and welcoming to all types of students, and is supported by a Latin club with opportunities for leadership and travel. Underclassmen YEARBOOK Photos Needed!
In order to maximize inclusion of students represented in the yearbook, we are asking that all underclassmen (grades 9, 10, 11) submit their own picture to be included in the student section of the yearbook! Student and Family Meals
Families can pick up breakfasts and lunches Monday-Friday, 11:15AM-1:15PM at 40 area schools, including Bryant Elementary, Sand Point Elementary, Eckstein Middle School, Nathan Hale High School, and Olympic Hills Elementary. Need Immunizations?
Is your child behind on immunizations, but you are concerned about going into a clinic? Roosevelt Teen Health Center is offering car visit vaccinations (sorry, no COVID vaccines yet). Please use this link to contact us or call 206-527-8336.
Guide for Urgent Care
Not sure whether you should take your child or teen to urgent care or the emergency room: Seattle Children’s has a new guide in English, Spanish and Arabic. Urgent care doesn't do well visits, sports physicals, or return to play after concussion. You can contact your primary care provider, or the teen health center will gladly assist you with those services. Call to make an appt. 206-527-8336 or go to this link to register.
Roosevelt School-Based Health Center
The Neighborcare Health Center at Roosevelt offers both remote and scheduled, in-person visits to students. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment for you or your child, please send an email to alexandram@neighborcare.org. 2020/21 School Year Calendar
Apply to be a Kingmaker
SPS' Office of African American Male Achievement is excited to offer an opportunity for African American male students in 7-12 grade. Kingmakers of Seattle Extended is a program focusing on the cultural, historical, social, and emotional needs of Black boys and teens. The next cohort will start Feb. 23 twice a week for five weeks after school. Students are encouraged to apply by Friday, February 19.
SPS In-Person Learning Update
SPS launched an In-Person Learning Plan page on their website that includes a 4 phase plan for return to buildings, detailed updates on the bringing preK-1 students back in-person, and updates on the bargaining process.
2021-22 SPS Budget Update
Next school year, Seattle Public Schools will have a $69.8M budget shortfall due to several factors, including limits on how much money SPS can collect through our educational levies and state formulas that determine the amount of funding Seattle receives for transportation and other critical programs. March School Day SAT - CANCELLED
Due to health and public safety concerns, the administration of the March 2021 school day SAT has been cancelled. The plan is to provide the school SAT to all seniors in fall 2021. For students who wish to take the test before fall they can still do so at the College Board where they can locate a separate testing site and register.
The Links Scholarships for Black Seniors
The Greater Seattle (WA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is giving out up to $15,000 in scholarships to African American/Black high school seniors. On Saturday, February 13th, they will host a scholarship workshop to provide application process support from 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Register for the Zoom link. Apply.
Washington State PTA Scholarship Program
WSPTA offers four $2,500 scholarships to graduating seniors from Washington state public high schools with an active PTA, who will be starting college (either two-year or four-year) in the fall. Click here for more information. Deadline March 1st.
Seattle Skills Center: 2020 – 2021 Second Semester Class Opening
The Seattle Skills Center is a FREE SPS program that prepares and advances high school juniors and seniors for college, career, and life. Skills Center provides this training through regular school year courses and our summer program. Courses offer 3 high school credits for one year course completion, industry recognized certification, advanced learning, and college credit. Hispanic Scholarship Fund
As an HSF Scholar, you will have access to HSF’s invaluable Scholar Support Services and be eligible to receive a scholarship, depending on available funds. The program is open to graduating seniors of Hispanic heritage with a minimum 3.0 GPA who plan to enroll full time in college in the fall of 2021. Deadline: February 15. Details and Application.
2021 Boeing Manufacturing Internships and Fellowship Program
Boeing is offering internship and fellowship programs for students 16 years of age or above. The application deadline for all programs is February 28, 2021.
Quest Bridge: College Prep Scholars Program – High School Juniors
The College Prep Scholars Program equips high-achieving high school juniors from low-income backgrounds with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to apply to top colleges. College Prep Scholars are historically five times more likely than other applicants to receive full four-year scholarships through the National College Match. Application deadline: March 24th.

Girls Water Polo Seeks Parent Board Members
Girls Water Polo is establishing a parent board which will be responsible for managing all aspects of the team, including hiring a new coach. Washington State PTA Legislative Report
The latest WSPTA Legislative Report contains information on recent bills that WSPTA members have testified about, as well as lots of links to bills that align with the WSPTA Legislative Platform. Some bills of note are:
- HB 1476 would provide enrollment stabilization funds to districts that have seen enrollment declines due to the pandemic
- HB 1373 would require schools to post contact information for behavioral health organizations on their website home pages and social media websites used by the school district
- SHB 1162 would reduce the number of credits required for high school graduation from 24 to 20 and establish an additional performance-based graduation pathway option

Centering the Mental Health of Black Youth
Thursday, February 25, 7:00 PM
KCTS 9 has partnered with the WA Therapy Fund Foundation and The Root of Our Youth for a virtual event to support the mental health and well-being of Black youth in our region. We will discuss barriers, reducing stigma and successful strategies for mental health and well-being within the Black community, featuring the testimony of teens and young adults with lived experience. Washington State PTA Essay Contest
The objective of the WSPTA Essay Contest is for students to write an essay about an influential role model that has had a profound impact on their life. The influential role model must be a real person that the student has interacted with, not a fictional character. Deadline March 1st.
Washington State PTA Game Development Competition
Students alone or in teams of up to six members, develop a game, either a physical board game or a computer game based on an assigned theme. Students’ submissions are judged in the following areas: best board game, best computer game, arts and animation, game design, programming (code), and audio design. Click here for more information. Girls on the Run Junior Coaches Needed
Girls on the Run Puget Sound teaches girl identifying youth in 3rd-8th grade how to be joyful, healthy, and confident while creatively integrating running and walking. We are looking for high school girls age 16 to 18 to apply for our Junior Coach program. Our program will provide leadership opportunities, instructional training, service hour credits, and a ton of fun! There are safe, in-person and 100% virtual coaching positions available. Applications for Junior Coaches close on February 26th.

Volunteers Needed at SPS Schools
If you are in a position to add a volunteer commitment to your life in support of students most adversely affected by COVID-19, please consider volunteering remotely to support students and educators. Training on using MS Teams (our virtual classroom platform) will be provided - you do not need to have this software on your computer. Please view the most urgent volunteer support needs here. Then, complete an interest form so you can be matched with a virtual classroom!
