Congratulations Katy!

Congratulations to Kathleen Luyk, our brilliant executive director and the talented, creative, and compassionate director of Òran and Vacilando. Katy was awarded a Con Spirito Award from Choir Alberta at a virtual ceremony on February 27. The Con Spirito Award recognizes "the spirit and dedication of individuals and their commitment to choral music in their local community.

Kokopelli Choir Association president Winston Pei gave the following intro at the virtual ceremony:

"Good afternoon, members of the Choir Alberta board, distinguished guests, and all of our award winners.
Thank you for this opportunity to say a few words about Katy Luyk.

In a word, Katy is remarkable, one of the most remarkable people I know.
Many of you will know her as the Executive Director of the Kokopelli Choir Association, the conductor and director of two of our three adult choirs, Òran and Vacilando, a past President of Choir Alberta, and a busy clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator.

But what I’d like to share today is a bit of what perhaps you don’t see.
For three years first as a choir parent, then the past eight serving on the Kokopelli Board and as a singer in Òran, I have had the privilege of getting to know Katy not just in what she has done, but seeing how she does it. It’s in all the ways, tiny and huge, that she has quietly and steadfastly steered our organization through eleven years of growth and development, and most recently through what for all of us has been the most challenging year of trying to manage an arts organization. It’s in how her skills as an artist fuel her work as an arts administrator and arts advocate, and her skills as an administrator focus and temper the art that she has helped create all across the country. It’s in how it always comes back to the people… the humanity… being expressed through the artistry, and the administration.

So much of what the Kokopelli Choir Association has become is due to Katy’s vision of what a choir organization can be, and what a choir organization should be. And as is being recognized in Katy being awarded the Choir Alberta Con Spirito Award, this vision extends well beyond our organization… it’s about what choir is meant to be for us all.

So, on behalf of the Kokopelli Board and Artistic Staff, we are delighted that you are being recognized for your incredible leadership and dedication to the choral community… on behalf of my fellow choristers in Òran and Vacilando, we love you so much… and from me, simply, thank you. It is a joy and a privilege to consider you a friend."

Continuing to make music in so many ways!

ChandraTala and Vacilando had a terrific workshop with Julia Davids and some members of the Canadian Chamber Choir at the beginning of March (see photo above).  Through videoconference, the various Kokopelli choirs have been able to connect with many other choral groups from across the country and around the world!  In the last few months, special guests have included: FreePlay Duo, Andrew Withington (New Zealand), Ariose Choir, Elise Bradley & Choirs Aotearoa (New Zealand), and composers Katerina Gimon and Marie-Claire Saindon. Our choirs have also done some virtual projects with other choirs including: Elektra, Myriad, Nova Voce, Adleisia, and Sirens.

Some of our conductors have worked with and given presentations to other choirs: Guelph Youth Singers, Elk Island Choirs, Vancouver Youth Choirs (Scott), the University of Regina Chamber Singers (Kitbielle), Lethbridge Orff chapter, the Calgary Women's Choir, and Da Camera Singers (Kim), Saskatchewan Youth Choir, Calgary Philharmonic Choir, and Avanti Chamber Singers (Laura).  Laura was also interviewed for a podcast Fresh Sounds, and continues working on the Sonic Timelapse project.

As COVID-19 restrictions continue to change, Kokopelli has been meeting online and a few singers have been meeting in very small groups outside for short sessions implementing all AHS guidelines.  With the arrival of slightly warmer weather, Kokopelli has been conducting its small-group sessions in the shelter of a parkade!

Volunteer Chat - Meet Elaine Kinghorn!

Elaine Kinghorn is a Kokopelli volunteer extraordinaire!

When young Jennifer Kinghorn (now McMillan) joined 'Nuf Sed in 1999, and then Kokopelli in 2000, she also brought her mother into our choir family. For two decades, Elaine Kinghorn has been one of our most dedicated and cherished volunteers. A longtime board member, Elaine became best known for capably running the box office at Kokopelli events. Behind the scenes, Elaine also found a million other ways to contribute to our organization.

Tell us about your earliest involvement in Kokopelli.
Well, I think it was around 2002. I used to help Louise Ludwig now and again, because she was just overwhelmed at times—collecting for tours, especially. She couldn’t come to every rehearsal. I told her, “You know, I’m not that far from rehearsal. I can pop in and collect for tours.” So, I’d just collect payments for her. And, the next thing I knew, I was involved selling tickets at the door.
I enjoy choral music, and where else can you go to get the best choral music? Once I got involved, I’d go and listen to it every week.

And how has your involvement with Kokopelli impacted your life?
Oh, goodness gracious. The tours alone. I mean, can you imagine? In my wildest dreams, I never dreamed I’d be going to Africa—not once, but twice.
And meeting the people in the choral community. Like Anne McIntyre. My gosh, I never had such a good time in my life, as when I travelled with her in Africa. And getting to know the staff, like [Koko bookkeeper] Maxine. Who could have brought a nicer person than that into my life? I’ve learned so much from her. The two of us worked together so well, for many many years.
It has impacted my life tremendously. If I hadn’t loved it so much, I wouldn’t have participated. It gave me something to do when I needed something to do.
All the people I’ve met! Hanging around in Africa for not one trip, but for two trips with Scott [Leithead]’s parents. And all the other parents, like the Olson family.
Man, I have been one lucky person. To have all this given to me. Well, not given to me, exactly, but I certainly took advantage!

Do you have any favourite memories? Something that sticks out as a real highlight?
I have so many favourite memories. But, the best one of all was probably [future son-in-law] John proposing to [daughter] Jennifer when we were in Africa. That was in 2007.
I think there were actually two proposals that year. Might even have been three.
Jennifer had been in Africa for a while—she was the exchange chorister that year. She was living with [Mascato founder] Mrs. Venter.
John decided that he would come to Africa that summer for the trip with Kokopelli. He had been away from Jennifer for several months by then, and this was killing him. He came over to our house, and he was the most nervous person in the whole wide world. I knew he was going to ask for our blessings. And, sure enough, that’s what he did.
So then, I think the very first night we were in Africa, we all went out to a nice restaurant, the Lighthouse. John was so nervous, and Jennifer kept saying, ‘What on earth is wrong with you?’ He knew he was going to ask her that evening. He was just as nervous as nervous can be.
But it all went down that evening, and the rest is history!

How has the choir experience affected your family—not just Jennifer, but now the next generation as well? What’s it like seeing your two granddaughters out there where Jen used to be?
You’ve seen little Alexis perform—that little girl can’t stand still if her life depended on it. (chuckles).  Jennifer was always such a little goody-two-shoes when she was in children’s choir. But Alexis has grown up with Kokopelli, and she knows you have to move—and she moves all the time! But I do love seeing both the grandchildren. I love every minute of it. All of the little ones! I just love all of them.

If you have a vehicle on its last legs—car, truck, van, SUV, motorcycle, boat, or RV—Donate a Car will give you a tax receipt, and Kokopelli receives a payment for the value of the vehicle.

Let the music soar...

Kokopelli keeps singing! The continued support from donations allow the Kokopelli Association to adapt and find ways to keep us singing. COVID-19 continues to prevent us from sharing our music through concerts, where ticket sales are a major source of income. Would you consider making a donation to help sustain us through this season?
