The International Pacific Halibut Commission is conducting an economic impact evaluation of commercial and charter halibut fleets in order to boost understanding of each group’s contributions to the local, regional, and national economy. The project involves a survey of individual charter operation activity and provides a great opportunity for our industry to quantify our value to Alaska and the country- but the IPHC needs your cooperation.
Southeast Alaska Guides Organization, Alaska Charter Association, Homer Charter Association, and IPHC Commissioner Richard Yamada join in encouraging all charter business owners to
take the time to complete the survey for your 2019 season, and your 2020 season time permitting. Both surveys start
here.
The survey is simple, but requires some revenue and expense figures you’ll need to dig up for accuracy. Logbook data on halibut retained/released will be helpful, but estimates are sufficient, and your inputs won’t skew general economic results. Questions about number of vessels, captains, staff etc. you’ll already have in your head.
All information is strictly confidential by IPHC policy.
This is your chance to shed some light on what halibut mean to your business and our industry, as well as what our industry means to our communities and nation. And it’s free of charge (besides the value of your time, estimated at less than 30 minutes per survey). We encourage you to take the time and give voice to our contributions.
The IPHC contact is economist Basia Hutniczak,
barbara.hutniczak@iphc.int (206) 634-1838 who is more than happy to answer any questions about the survey.
