Regional launch of the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labor
During a virtual meeting on February 11th, the ILO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean launched the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labor, where governments, some of them represented at the highest level, workers, employers and other social actors, reaffirmed the regional commitment to end this practice in all its forms by 2025, in line with target 8.7 of the SDGs. It was highlighted that this is an historic opportunity to act, inspire and undertake concrete and efficient actions that ensure the Rights of Children and Adolescents, such as improve law compliance, ensure adequate public budgets, guarantee labor rights and promote value chains free of child labor. The Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labor was recognized as a good practice internationally.
The event featured interventions by speakers at the highest level, including the Presidents of Colombia, Guatemala and Peru; the Vice-President of Costa Rica; ILO Director General, Guy Ryder; ECLAC Executive Secretary, Alicia Barcena; Nobel Peace Prize winner, Kaliash Satyarthy, and representatives from workers and employers.
