SECOND WORKSHOP ON RESEARCHING LOCAL HISTORY
Some of you were left disappointed on 4 Feb by the failure of the Zoom link to our first workshop. Please accept our apologies…

...and please accept this invitation to a second workshop on the 25th – and note the new joining arrangements below.

Once again, this will be a partnership event with SWHEA/the Saltaire Collection.
  • Just want to hear who’s looking into what? This meeting’s for you.
  • Currently pursuing a project yourself? This meeting’s for you.
  • Would like to have a go at research? This meeting’s for you.
At the first workshop some of you managed to join a very profitable and enjoyable exchange. We made an audio record so that everyone can hear what went on. Listen on YouTube at https://youtu.be/fTwR4kLJ5Pk

This second workshop will not be a repeat. There will be an open session where we hope to hear from you but the warm-up will be in the hands of two experienced researchers giving a short and sweet rundown on their work - read the brief introductions below.

THURSDAY 4 MARCH 2021 7.00 PM by Zoom
THE CROSSLEYS OF DEAN CLOUGH, HALIFAX
A sister enterprise to the Salts
It will be a great pleasure to welcome the President of the Halifax Antiquarians, David Glover, to the Saltaire History Club.

The subject of our last quarterly meeting was Isabel Salt, daughter of Titus Salt jr and Catherine Salt nee Crossley, a member of the legendary Halifax family, the world’s leading carpet manufacturers.

On 4 March, David will introduce us to the Crossleys and their links to the Salts. A slideshow and talk that’s not to be missed.

Invented in 1878 by Louis Crossley, cousin of Catherine Salt, this may well be the apparatus used on 20 September 1879 when a communication with the Crossley’s Square Church, Halifax, was formed by wire from Milner Field and the offices at Salts Mill, to the Salts’ warehouse in Well Street, Bradford, thence to Midland Buildings, forward by the Post Office to Dean Clough and then on to Square Church.
Important note: This meeting will be by Zoom. We do not recommend using the above telephonic apparatus to join the Club meeting. Instead…

BRIEF INTROS FOR THE WORKSHOP ON RESEARCHING LOCAL HISTORY ON 25 FEBRUARY

Ruth Quinn’s PhD research is on the gardens and green spaces of Saltaire. A trustee of SWHEA and a postgraduate student at the University of Hull, Ruth has worked on a number of projects in the heritage sector focused on sustainability and wellbeing. She’s motivated by a desire to understand the significance of 'green heritage' at Saltaire, and why it matters.

Les Brook – unlike Ruth, a mere amateur researcher – is the chair of the History Club and one of his lockdown investigations has been into what Titus was up to in Bradford before his Saltaire adventure. Read Les’s notes on 'Salt before Saltaire' on the Club website https://www.saltairehistoryclub.org/research-publications
