The Land

News about the environment and climate change is everywhere and some of it is about positive things that are happening. It is common knowledge that the land is of utmost importance to Indigenous Peoples and the connectedness of mother earth is central to Indigenous beliefs and behaviour.

The attached article sent to me by my daughter, Jennifer was written by Henry Lickers, a Great Lakes International Joint Commission Commissioner. It appeared in the fall edition of the Lakes Letter, a publication of the commission. Henry is a Haudenosaunee, a member of the Seneca Nation from Six Nations. It is a story about his connection with the land while living at Six Nations as a boy and how he dealt with his move to Toronto. It is delightful, instructive and revealing.

In the words of Tim Thompson, a fellow Haudenosaunee and a HIP director, "Henry is both brilliant and a great story teller".
