February ZOOM MEETING

Should I Tell You The Truth?
by Lynn Wenzel

Lynn Wenzel will speak about the dilemmas she encountered when writing her most recent book, Puritans, Patriots and Pioneers: An American Story. The History and Genealogy of the Shallenberger, Ziemer-Hansen, Ruff-Harding-Chamberlain and Dryer Families with information on 17 other ancestrally allied families. Lynn will read a few passages from the book, focusing on those areas where she deliberated on discretion and intentionality. This dilemma is especially concerning when long-held family mysteries are revealed—secrets of grandparents or parents, even if they are no longer living. Even if what you want to write is a fact. Lynn will discuss the ethical and loving challenges of revealing nothing, part, or all. At the conclusion of the program, she will be happy to answer questions about writing genealogical and family histories or writing in general.

Lynn Wenzel is the author of three books and numerous magazine and newspaper articles. She has written for the New York Times, Newsweek, Ms. Magazine, Victorian Living, Down East Magazine, Newsday and many others, as well as the Union newspaper. She is a member of many genealogical and historical societies including the Nevada County Historical Society, and bemoans the dearth of history education in schools. She is Co-President of Business and Professional Women of Nevada County’s Education Fund/Scholarship Program and Director of Communications for Nevada County Citizens for Choice. She believes, as George Santayana said, that “those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.”
