Dear Subscribers,

HerringFest is upon us. On this Thursday night, the 4th of March at 7pm, you can go to www.hornbyarts.com/herringfest to watch the livestream of the opening performances on YouTube, after which, the portal for the online 2021 HerringFest Art Exhibition will be open on the same page. You can also go to our event page on Facebook to see the performances there and then head over to the exhibition.

Rachelle Chinnery, myself, and our interns have been hard at work delivering this digital presentation of the HerringFest Art Show. I've been at the Hall where Juniper Slieker was working with photographer Don Peterson and Rachelle to capture artworks that will be installed in the virtual gallery. This past weekend, Zsofin Sheehy and Rachelle and I toured the island filming on-location performances for screening at the opening. It's a pleasure to work with such capable people, and it's truly inspiring and important to be reminded first hand of the breadth and depth of the talent of our artists and art techs.

With supporting that scene in mind, I'm happy to share that we will be receiving a $500K provincial grant—our first directly from the province—to aid construction of the Arts Centre. With costs of construction fluctuating with the pandemic, this new support brings us enormous relief and confidence. We recently hosted Elder Barb Whyte, descendant of the Pentlatch Peoples and member of the K'ómoks First Nation, who led us in a ceremony to bless the trees on site that will be coming down this week. It was moving, and we feel well positioned to proceed with construction. The BC Arts Council has also contributed another $75K to the project, and several significant private donations have been made over the last two months. I'm sure we'll have lots more news and updates soon on the Arts Centre.

Thanks as ever for all your support!

Anticipating the turn of the season,

Andrew Mark, ED
