Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you that your biology student will participate in a series of sexual health education lessons beginning in April after spring break. These lessons will take place during biology class on C days (Wednesdays).
The recent change in our Wednesday Eagle Days to C Days allows us to meet with our classes for 30 minutes. Our team has discussed options for how to keep this time productive for our students while centering our students’ social-emotional needs. We feel that using this time to address social-emotional and health topics that fall under the sexual health umbrella provides a good balance.
Each biology teacher has received training from CPS to implement the sexual health lessons as designed by CPS under Illinois state law. Our philosophy on sexual health education is to provide young people with knowledge that will help them understand how to make decisions that will keep themselves safe and healthy in the context of relationships. Our sexual health education for biology students may include the following topics:
- sexual health and the law;
- finding accurate, reliable information regarding sexual health;
- human anatomy, body awareness, and body image;
- pregnancy, human development, and birth;
- relationship communication, boundaries, and consent.
The Board acknowledges that parents/guardians are the primary sexuality educators for their child/children. Jones College Prep is committed to partnering with you to provide supplementary instruction to students via the sexual health education lessons.
Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s biology teacher or school administrator if you have any questions or concerns about sexual health education. If you would like to opt your student out of sexual health education, your student’s biology teacher or a school administrator must be contacted directly, in writing, by the student’s parent or guardian with this request.
Please complete the opt-out form no later than April 26, 2021.
Sincerely,
Jones Biology Teachers
