In this article, child care is identified as a social determinant of health that critically impacts the health, development, and economic well-being of children, women and families. Characteristics of home-based child care providers who offer non-standard hour care
Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 2021
Using data from the 2012 US National Survey of Early Care and Education, this study seeks to identify home-home-based child care providers who offer non-standard hour (NSH) care. Results indicate that providers who offered NSH care are more likely to receive government subsidies, have lower educational levels, and serve fewer children. Results also find that providers who receive home visitors tend to provide more hours of NSH care. Policy recommendations are presented to better support home-based child care providers in offering NSH care.

Who cares if parents have unpredictable work schedules?: Just-in-time work schedules and child care arrangements
Social Problems, 14 September 2020
This study examines the influence of parents’ unpredictable work schedules on care arrangements for children 0-9. Results indicate that parents’ having on-call work and last-minute shift changes are more likely to rely on informal care arrangements and, in some cases, to leave children without adult supervision.  The study cautions that the lack of quality child care for parents with unpredictable work schedules may have consequences for children's development and safety and may contribute to the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage.
