"Let go of who you think you’re supposed to be;
Embrace who you
are."

- Brene Brown

When I was growing up I always wanted a jean jacket.

Why you ask?

Great question... Probably because I was a huge Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Motley Crue fan. Maybe I secretly wished I grew up in the 80's, looked as cool as Jon Bon Jovi, and was also the lead singer of a huge rock band. Aaaaaand back to the story...

Growing up I always wanted a jean jacket. However, none of my friends wore jean jackets and no one in high school really wore jean jackets either. So, I never ended up getting one. And if I'm being completely honest I don't think I have the street cred or the Bon Jovi-esque confidence to be a trendsetter in high school.

When I was 19-years-old my brother and I were shopping in Winnipeg and stumbled upon some pretty sweet Levi's jean jackets. We were both pretty pumped as my brother also grew up a "metalhead". We decided to each buy a jean jacket and start to live that "rockstar" life we always dreamed of (<--- insert sarcasm).

I was super excited about my new purchase and here's what I did next...

I hung it up in my closet and never wore it for 6 years.

You're probably asking yourself, "Why would you buy a jacket you loved and then never wear it?"

That is an another excellent question. Here is my answer: I was too afraid of what people would think or say. I did not have the confidence to wear it because I cared too much of what other people thought.

So the jacket just sat there. For 6 years.

When I was 25-years-old I started to make some changes in my life.

I started working out. (Actually working out... not just strolling into the gym, doing 2 sets of bench press, checking my watch and leaving.) I started eating right. I started reading. I adopted my dog Casey (He is now 10-years-old and my best bud). I got out of a 6 year-relationship that was no longer bringing me joy. I quit my job that was no longer brining me joy. I quit my classes at the University of Manitoba because that direction was no longer bringing me joy. I joined a CrossFit gym. I started hanging out with only positive people who had similar interests and goals. I met with a Certified Executive Coach to help me find my way.

Basically I had enough. I had enough of being unhappy. I had enough of not living the way I wanted to live. I had enough of not having the confidence to make the decisions I needed to make that would ultimately lead to me being happy.

I made a lot of changes in those couple of years and in 2012 I moved back in with parents and started my new career as the owner and head coach of CrossFit Rocked and now Rocked Community Fitness.

And guess what happened next?

I started wearing my jean jacket.

Now you might be thinking, "Zack.. that's a silly story. The jean jacket is just a jean jacket."

And you would be correct in thinking that.

But to me the jean jacket represented so much more. It represents the day that I started living my life the way I wanted to live it. To just be me. To value my own opinion over everyone else's. To do what makes ME happy and no longer do things because they make other people happy.

It's incredible how much better your life gets when you start giving zero "fox" about what other people think and starting giving a lot of "fox" about what makes YOU truly happy.

“It never ceases to amaze me: we all love ourselves more than other people, but care more about their opinion than our own.”
- Marcus Aurelius

What's really funny is that over the years that jacket has received the most compliments over any other piece of clothing I own. Last spring a good friend said to me, "Hey man, that's a sweet jacket."

I replied, "It's funny you mention that... let me tell you a story."

Ps. I'm not perfect. I actually do still care what people think. I am not "bullet proof" and my skin is not thick enough that negative comments don't bother me. I have simply improved over the years by shifting my mindset and making some positive changes. I am doing a much better job of filtering the feedback and I no longer let the opinions of others dictate my life.
